A warm welcome to all OU graduates

The Association of Open University Graduates (AOUG) is an independent Association run by OU graduates, open to any OU graduates. AOUG invite you to get in touch to find out more about the Assocation and to join us at any of our events. See our website or contact us by email.

Friends and family are also always welcome to attend all our events as guests of AOUG members.

The Association has been providing fellowship and support to OU graduates and the Open University itself since 1988 and the following are our official aims and objectives:

  • To promote the interests of the graduates of The Open University and the standing of Open University Degrees and Awards.
  • To support and promote the continuing development of The Open University.
  • To promote and encourage the development of local groups of Open University graduates both in the United Kingdom and throughout the World.
  • To promote educational, charitable and social activities for members at national, regional and local levels both within the UK and throughout the World.
  • To provide members with such services and facilities as they require in the furtherance of these objects.

AOUG Awards in the Regions and Nations

AOUG Foundation for Education Awards in the Regions and Nations
 
Do you know an Open University Graduate who gained their OU degree whilst overcoming adversity of some kind, over and above that of the average student? Did this student graduate in the last 12 months?
 
If so, this person might be suitable to be nominated for an AOUG Foundation for Education Award. This award, from a charity, is administered by Trustees, who are the elected Officers of the Association of Open University Graduates, and offers one annual Award to a new OU graduate in each of the thirteen OU Regions and Nations, as well as one in Europe and another to represent the Rest of the World.

If you would like to know more about who will qualify and how to make a nomination, please visit the AOUG website. Deadline for nominations is 16th July and must be made by an OU student, an OU graduate or a member of OU staff.

AOUG Region 07 - Yorkshire - Upcoming Events

 

Saturday 20th April 11am

Meet at the little chapel building in the centre of the York cemetery for coffee prior to a guided walk and talk about this fascinating cemetery with Clive Dawson. Clive is the gentleman who gave the fascinating talk at our October 2012 Saturday meeting.

Wednesday 8th May 7pm

Meet in the bar in the Bowling Alley of the Doncaster Dome complex, Doncaster Lakeside, Bawtry Road, Doncaster

DN4 7PD. Socialise and then enjoy a friendly game of tenpin bowling, with no skill required, joining invited East

Midlands (05) members for a handshake event when AOUG members will hold their annual challenge against local OUSA

members. All friends and family are welcome to join in. There are opportunities for a meal afterwards for those who wish

to stay later.

Meet for coffee at the Friends’ Meeting House, York. Talk at 10.30 – ‘The Well-Dressing customs in Derbyshire’. With an

AOUG Region 05 - East Midlands - Upcoming Events

 

 

Sunday 26th May 5.30pm

Meet at the Waterfront Restaurant, Barton-under-Needwood

DE13 8DZ , off A38 for a light meal (Full Sunday lunch is

available until 8pm but booking is advisable), prior to an

evening stroll from 7pm, at Barton Marina. (1st car park on

right) This guided walk of approximately 4 miles is part of the

National Forest Walking Festival and therefore not exclusive

to AOUG member. There is no charge and the pace will be

leisurely taking approximately 2 hours. Walking boots/shoes

are recommended

Sunday 9th June 11am

Meet in the restaurant for coffee inside Calke Abbey, Ticknall,

Derbyshire, DE73 7LE. (Look for a copy of OMEGA on the

table.) Explore this National Trust property by “timed ticket”

and discover the story of the decline of a grand country

house. Gather for lunch in the restaurant and then a chance

to walk in the walled gardens and orangery. National Trust

members have free entry with membership card.

AOUG Region 04 - West Midlands - Upcoming Events

A visit to the Museum of Cannock Chase, Valley Road,

Hednesford, Staffordshire,

WS11 1TD. Tel: 01543877666. This museum is established

on a site which was once a home to the Cannock Chase’s

colliery which provided training for thousands of young

people for the coal mining industry. The museum explores

social history, domestic life as well as industrialisation and

military role of this area. Please meet at the main entrance of

the museum. We will finish at 3.00 p.m., but members can

stay on until museum closes.

Saturday 16th November, 2013 at 11 am

A visit to Coventry Transport Museum, Millennium Place, Hales

Street, Coventry, CV1 1JD. Tel: 02476234270. Coventry is a

the birth place of the British cycle & motor industries. This

museum is designated as “having a collection of national

importance”. Please meet at the main entrance. There will

be plenty of things to see and members can stay on until the

museum closes at 5.00 p.m. Refreshments are available at

Esquires Coffee House at the main entrance.

Tea & Coffee Mornings

Tea & Coffee mornings are regularly held at St. Peter’s

House, Exchange Street, Wolverhampton. Members discuss

activities and events as well as visit AOUG website

AOUG Region 02 - South Upcoming Events

Oxford and Area

Thursday 18th April, at 11.30am

 

Visit to the Pitt Rivers Museum, Parks Road, Oxford.

Admission is free. Meet in the entrance to the Natural History

Museum (which will be closed, but the same entrance covers

both).

Saturday 22nd June, at 11am

A walk from Oxford City Centre to Marston Village, lunch at

the Victoria Arms, Mill Lane. The walk is expected to take

about 90 minutes. After lunch, either walk back into Oxford,

or take the 14A bus from Marston Village Church. Meet at

Carfax, at the foot of Carfax Tower.

Saturday 17 August, at 11.45am

AOUG 25th Anniversary Celebration. A short boat trip,

followed by lunch. Meet at Salter’s Steamers on Folly Bridge,

Oxford (OX1 4LA) for a 40 minute round trip to Iffley Lock,

departing at noon. The cost is £8; buy your ticket on the

day. Upon return, walk to The Mitre, (High Street, Oxford,

OX1 4AG) - about 10 minutes, for lunch. For those coming

only for lunch, that should start at 1 pm. If you would like to

attend, please contact Colin Reed on 01235 815548, as he

will need to reserve a table.

Saturday 7th September, at 1.30pm

JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis Themed Guided Walking Tour,

with Official Blue or Green Badge Guide. Meet outside the

Visitor Information Centre, 15-16 Broad Street, Oxford OX1

3AS. The tour, which starts at 1.45 pm, costs £8.50, covers

between 1 and 2 miles and lasts about 2 hours. Although it

is possible to buy your ticket on the day, these tours are very

popular, so it is advisable to book in advance.

 

Saturday 12th October, at 12 for 12.30pm

The Autumn Lunch is to be held at The Mitre, corner of Turl

Street with the High Street, Oxford. Members and friends

from any Region or Nation will be welcome to join us. If you

Thursday 21st November, at 11am

Meet for coffee in the Gallery Café in Oxford Town Hall,

St Aldates, OX1 1BX. Afterwards, stroll round the newly

refurbished Museum of Oxford, also in the Town Hall, entry

to which is free.

Thursday 19th December, at 11 am

Coffee morning in the Ashmolean Museum’s rooftop café.

It is anticipated that the annual Oxford Christmas Market

will be taking place on the nearby redeveloped site of the

Castle.

Meet at the forecourt of Winchester railway station

(southbound side) and then visit the Great Hall at Winchester,

see King Arthur’s Round Table and Queen Eleanor’s garden,

and then to the Cathedral. Lunch afterwards in the city.

AOUG AGM and 25th Anniversary Celebrations

Association of Open University Graduates 25th Anniversary AGM and Social Weekend The Association of Open University Graduates would like to invite all their members, Open University Graduates, Open University staff to their AGM on 17th – 19th May 2013 and to bring along family members and friends. As well as the business meeting, there will be visits to some of the fascinating attractions that the Black Country has to offer – the Leather Museum, a canal journey into a limestone cave and – appropriately for our 25th Anniversary – Birmingham’s fascinating Jewellery Quarter . After Dinner on Friday you can relax with entertainment. Be prepared with your glad rags and dancing shoes for the Gala Dinner and Reception on Saturday. Meet up with old friends and make new friends. If you can find time, enjoy the Pool and Leisure Centre at the newly refurbished Leisure Centre of the comfortable and welcoming hotel the Holiday Inn at 20 Wolverhampton Road West,Walsall WS2 0BS .

AOUG South - Region 02 - stroll and tea

Oxford and Area

Spring Equinox stroll (actually, one day late) and cream tea. Meet at the gate to Christchurch Gardens, in St Aldates, Oxford, for a leisurely walk. The intention is to finish up at the Mitre at about 2.45 pm, there to enjoy a cream tea. Meet inside the main entrance of Southend Pier. Intrepid walkers will then go up the stairs for a brisk, invigorating walk while others purchase tickets to travel the mile and a quarter by train. At the end of the Pier explore the Lifeboat Station and shop, then at around 11:30am sit in the cafe of the newly built cultural centre to enjoy a cup of coffee and a chat.
