Meeting point for students and staff interested in Paganism and all matters Occult.

Gnosis Aims:

  • To bring together a range of Paths, Traditions and Perspectives in an interested and respectful environment;
  • To learn from each other's experience in terms of our subject and as regards our spiritual development;
  • To explore Occult and Pagan insights across a variety of subject areas;
  • To represent Pagans / Occultists of all paths and traditions at the OU.

To join, all that is required is the desire to share your interest in Paganism and/or the Occult with others.

Curiosity... (I know, it killed the cat!)

Hi all,

I am neither a pagan or occultist but I am curious about the concepts, both from a historic and a contemporary point of view. I'm not sure if this forum is still active as there doesn't seem to be much going on recently. However, on the off-chance that someone is 'listening', I just wondered if it would be possible to explain the difference (if there is one) between what you mean by paganism and gnosis.

I am currently studying DD307, a social psychology module as part of my aim towards a degree in Philosophy and psychology.

Hello!

Hello   I'm new to the group, but not to Paganism.  My parents are Pagan, so I had the pleasure of a very spiritual childhood.  I must admit that my attempts to find a like-minded group has been highly unsuccessful, so I consider myself a solitary practitioner, with very eclectic ideas.

My fiance and I are holding our handfasting next week, so I've had great fun researching different traditions and writing our own ritual, and the best bit - shopping for and making new supplies to update my very old tools!  If anyone is interested, I'll post some photos from the event in a couple of weeks.

I'm currently in my third year of OU studies, working towards a degree in Psychology, which I am finding fascinating.  Outside of uni and my job, I am a keen singer/songwriter and guitarist, and I took up the violin a little while ago and passed my Grade One a year ago, but I'm currently taking a break from music lessons so that my fiance can go for drum lessons.  I also have two horses, two dogs and a cat who all keep me very busy!

So that's me, and I'm looking forward to joining in discussions and activities that may come up

Just a quick hello

Just a very quick hello because it's nearly midnight and I'm almost falling asleep

I've been a pagan for ten years now - eclectic greenwitch (in the closet) so it's nice to find that this group has survived the passing of First Class.

New to Paganism

Hi, I'm new to Paganism and new to Platform.  I'm not new to the OU though.

I'm reading my first book on the basics of Paganism and finding it fascinating and nothing like my preconcevied ideas about it.

I don't have anything new to add, just to say hi, and hope to learn much more about it.

Hi Everyone

Got to be honest I'm a little bit irritated, so apologies if this comes across too forcefully in this message...

There is a new comment on here stating that a potential member of the group has deleted her original message as the "sight (sic) seems to be inactive" Not exactly a helpful attitude I'm afraid.

Now I'll admit I've been a bit quiet these last couple of months, and I apologise for that. However, if you scroll down you will see that no one but me has ever posted a new topic on here and even then I'm lucky if I get more than one comment even though there are 22 other members. Is it suprising I got a bit discouraged?

Since I intended this as a discussion group and not a fan club (!) and I'm as busy as any other OU student, I kind of expected other people to take the initiative sometimes and not wait for me to come up with stuff to talk about. There are quite a few hints on this score dotted about after all!

I am going to make one more effort to come on here regularly and get Gnosis up and running again.Any news, views or opinions from the other members would be vastly appreciated. Also if anyone fancies becoming a co-admin let me know and I shall gladly pass the poisoned chalice

Thanks and blessed be,

Therese

Equinox Greetings!

Greetings of the Equinox everyone, and in this part of the country at least it looks as though it's going to be a sunny one!

Hate to whinge on a Feast, but I've noticed we've gone a bit quiet on here of late - I realise that people myself included are getting to grips with the start of term, but if we are going to have an occult forum it would be grand if more people could start discussions on matters which interest them, or just pop in and say hi - I'm sure I'm not the only OU Pagan who is feeling a wee bit lonely!

For example, how are people planning to mark today's Equinox? I will, as tradition dictates, be sending a million or so texts to various Pagan friends up and down the land, and then tonight I will be participating in a small ceremony in my tradition. I will round things off with a a glass of wine - as I generally only drink alcohol on the Feasts, it really makes the day feel special!

Thanks everyone and blessed be

Therese

Bon Voyage! (and the NINE stars of Gnosis!)

Well here we go...

The books should be arriving any day now, I've cleared my desk and bought some funky stationary (we scientists are sad like that) and I'm all set to lose my OU virginity!

I'd just like to wish my fellow Gnosis-ites all the best with their courses whether they are starting out like me or more seasoned students and do feel free to come and tell us all everything you're up to!

Blessed be.

Therese

Why do We Study? And the Seven Stars of Gnosis!

Good morning, fellow forum-ites....

There's an issue which really interests me and I wondered what people on here thought about it....I've had the chance to speak to quite a few OU students now and it seems like most people's main reason for studying is career-related - gaining a qualification either to change career or to move forward in their current job.

This made me feel quite strange. I signed up for Science because I love astronomy and you can do a specialised BSc, an idea I find pretty exciting right now. I like the job I do already (I'm a security guard) and future careers were the last thing on my mind when I signed up for the OU.

As a Pagan, my religion also had a huge influence on my choice of course - I feel privileged to study the night sky, something I have worshipped for years in the form of the Egyptian star goddess Nuit.

What are your motivations for studying with the OU? And if you have Pagan beliefs (I appreciate not everyone on here may practice) did they have any influence in your choice?

Looking forward to hearing more.

Blessed Be

Therese

Hi everyone...

Just wanted to say how excited I am by the response I've received since setting up Gnosis a whole three weeks ago.  Six members in less than a month? I'm impressed anyway, so thanks for coming on board.

I'm not sure if a personal introduction is appropriate here but since it's my bright idea that got us into all this trouble, perhaps it might help to break the proverbial ice...! In no particular order then, I'm a new OU student, enrolled for Science Starts Here and hoping to go on to study Physics and Astronomy. I have been an practising Pagan / Occultist involved with various groups for the last ten years.

Just to reiterate, Gnosis aims to become a meeting point for students and staff members of all paths and traditions, practising and non-practising and also welcomes anyone with an interest in finding out about Paganism and/or Occultism. A desire to share and learn from each other's experience are all that's needed.

I will be coming onto Platform regularly now, as I would really love to see our fluffy little fledgling group grow up, take to the skies and soar like Horus! Please feel free to introduce yourself to the rest of the group and generally make yourself at home. Also as these are really early days, I would particularly appreciate any ideas people may have for discussions, activities and any other cool stuff.

Thank you and Blessed Be!

Therese
