Creative Climate short film competition 2011
As part of the Open University Creative Climate project the OU and BBC have worked to make space for some fresh approaches to environmental issues. Most environment communications are as dull as the issues are important. Leading creative talent from the UK’s top film schools has responded with a mix of drama, animation and factual films.

Movies You Just Watched
So what movie did you just go watch and what were your opinions on it?
I just saw Rise of the Planet of the Apes and was incredibly absorbed by it. The CGI effect soon wears off and I found myself completely engaged. Definitely one of the better summer blockbusters this year!

OU academic directs award-winning film
The feature film Vortex, directed by John Oates from the Child and Youth Studies Group in the Open University's faculty of Education and Language Studies with his Hungarian colleague Csaba Szekeres, won a Premier Award at the British Film Institute on Thursday (24 March). This top award was given by the British Film and Video Council in the Learning on Screen Awards competition 2011.
The film is a co-production by The Open University and the Hunnia Filmstudio, Budapest, and is a documentary that follows the lives of young Roma children and their families living in poverty in a remote village in rural Hungary.
Vortex also won top prize in a Hungarian film festival last year, for its hard-hitting portrait of the lives of an ethnic minority group.
The OU’s Child and Youth Studies group conducts national and international research, including the Young Lives project tracking the development of children in Ethiopia, India, Peru and Vietnam over 15 years.

Movies you couldn't watch in their entirety
On Scott's note, I wonder if you have any movies on your list that you were not able to watch in their entirety the first time round.
It could have been in the cinema or at home and it can be a scary movie or a romantic comedy (or an action flick for that matter) that you were forced to watch.
My list consists of the following films:
The Shining
A late at night watch were I decided to call it a day when Jack started to loose his mind (so pretty early). Went down better as an afternoon watch.
The Hitcher
Rutger Hauer as scary hitch-hiker who doesn't like if he's thrown out of the car. I still can remember the good guy eating a burger and finding a finger in his chips. It's so long since I watched that it might be interesting to give it a revisit. I also just saw that there is a 2007 remake. Anybody seen that?
Saw
Any of the saw movies. I started to watch the first installment once but really couldn't see why I should watch it to the end. Was never tempted to give it another or to watch the later films.

Films you own but don't watch but you will if you stumble upon them on TV late at night!
What a strange phenomona this is. You own, says, Jaws on DVD and quite probably it's still wrapped up in it's cellophane, all unused and unloved. Then you catch a bit of the large finned one munching away on the small screen late one evening and it's impossible to tear yourself away.
Here's a few more from me, but does this happen to you and what films does it happen with?
The Burbs - Tom Hanks in zany, black comedy.
Brewster's Millions - Richard Pryor and John Candy comedy
Trading Places - Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd comedy
Aliens - classic sci-fi action horror. Not a comedy.

What's your favourite film for Valentine viewing?
Valentine's day is upon us. So what's your favourite romantic movie and why?
I'm not a fan of romantic movies per se (nor romance!), but a few romantic comedies are respectable viewing.
Off the top of my head, if I had to choose a film to watch for Valentine's Day I would go for the black comedy Grosse Point Blank. It sees cool as an iceberg John Cusack playing a hitman visiting is hometown on a job, during which his romance with his childhood sweetheart (Minnie Driver) is rekindled. In between a hail of bullets and destruction. Quality soundtrack, too.
Watch the trailer for Grosse Point Blank.
