Trio of broadcasting awards for OU/BBC series about social workers

An Open University/BBC co-produced documentary series which looked at the challenging role of social workers has won three accolades in the Royal Television Society Awards, West of England.

The awards are for Best Documentary, Best Director and Editing.

The three-part documentary series Protecting Our Children, featured on BBC2 last year, was produced with the expert insight of three Open University academics.

Dr Barry Cooper and Dr Lucy Rai, both Senior Lecturers in Social Work in the Faculty of Health and Social Care, were consultants on the series and worked with the production team for over a year giving advice on social work practice and policy development.

In addition, Debbie Stringer, Senior Lecturer in Law provided support as part of the module team.

The series followed the work of Bristol’s child protection teams over the course of a year and observed their jobs first-hand, exploring how the crises of the last decade had impacted on their ability to safeguard children.

Commenting on the awards, Dr Rai said: “Working on Protecting Our Children was a fantastic opportunity to work closely with the BBC and social workers in Bristol to present the public with a rare insight into the everyday work of child protection social workers.

"The series created a challenging, emotive but very honest reflection on the profession and will be of great benefit to students learning about this area of work.”

Protecting Our Children also won the Grierson Award for Best Documentary in 2012.

OU Vice-Chancellor supports campaign to get the nation online

For more than 40 years the OU has been transforming the lives of millions of people by using the technology of the day to help them to access high-quality education. And, says OU Vice-Chancellor Martin Bean, being online will increasingly aid people’s ability to access education and a wide variety of other services.

In this video message Martin explains how giving an hour of your time to help someone online can transform lives - and how he'll be introducing his young daughter to the importance of cyber safety, as part of a campaign to get the nation online by the end of 2012.

Why I'm giving an hour to Mr and Mrs OC...

I never quite understood why the UK still does the whole daylight savings thing. Right from being a nipper I’ve always forgotten when, during the year, the clocks go forward/back and the only way I can remember which is which is by the rather Americanised ‘spring forward, fall back’ mantra.

I remember a kids’ TV series which was on when I was younger called Eerie Indiana and one of the episodes was about the main character refusing to adhere to daylight savings and becoming trapped in the ‘lost hour’. Man, I loved that series. The lead actor in it was called Omri Katz and I had such a crush on him. What’s an hour anyway? What can you do in an hour? I could watch an episode of the fantastic new BBC series Frozen Planet. I could read about three pages of a module book (I get distracted easily). I could fritter away some time googling myself (yep, I’m a self-confessed paranoid narcissist). Or this afternoon I’m going to sit for an hour listening to my professor rambling on about post-modernism and post-fordism.

Digital Champion logo
You can’t accomplish a lot within an hour, admittedly, but you can set a ball rolling. In my job I deal with a lot of social housing tenants, a lot of whom are elderly. A few weeks ago I came across a lovely old couple who I’ve since had some really good chats with about everything from what the area used to look like before the estate was built to how most of my life/job is done via a computer. Now this old couple have never really dabbled with computers, they’re in their early 80s, have just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary and live in comfortable bliss with each other. However, Mrs Old Couple is now pretty much house bound and can’t really get out, and she misses knowing what’s going on in the area and it’s so sad to hear how involved in the community she used to be, but can't be more.

Now some of you may remember that back in February I went to the National Digital Conference in London. There was a rather embarrassing interview with me on here which I simply cannot watch anymore for the sheer hatred of my voice, but following it I signed up to be a Digital Champion and pledged to help someone get online by 2012, but to be honest no opportunity has arisen as yet and I’ve not had the time to seek one out. Until Mr and Mrs Old Couple that is.

As part of the campaign there’s a ‘Give an Hour’ pledge and this is my chance to go for it. I’ve arranged with Mr and Mrs OC to go and visit them next week with my laptop. I have a mobile broadband dongle so I needn’t worry about connections or anything just yet. My plan is to show them that there’s a really great and easy way for Mrs OC to keep in touch with her friends and the community via the internet. A lot of the clubs she used to go to have websites and the Council have news pages she could read. These will give her much more up to date information than the free newspapers and can let her pick and choose what info she reads rather than only getting the info her husband remembers to pass on.

I don’t expect to be able to teach them much about the internet within an hour and depending on the availability of cups of tea and custard creams I may be there all afternoon, but I’m hoping it might just plant the seed in her mind that the internet isn’t something to be feared. My late father-in-law bought his first computer at age 75 and took to it like a duck to water, so there’s hope for everyone.

Fantastic idea to get everyone online. My parents in are in their seventies and are very nervous about the Internet but it would really help them to get online, even if it's just to do online shopping which they could get delivered. Personally I don't know how I ever managed without the Internet it is such a useful tool.

Entrepreneur and UK digital champion Martha Lane Fox says it is "fantastic" that the Open University has pledged its support for Race On Line 2012.

Writing in the Open University's Open Eye bulletin in the Independent, she said it is a major step towards achieving the campaign's goal of getting 100 percent of the nation online.

"If just a fraction of  Open University’s close to two million students, alumni and staff share their IT savvy with an offliner, we’ll be making real strides towards tackling this problem," she said.

Is it okay to volunteer for selfish reasons?

What does the word ‘volunteering’ mean to you? That’s the question student blogger Carrie is asking in her latest entry for Platform as she reveals why she is a school governor, OUSA representative and Digital Champion supporting people get online

“I somehow had it in my head that volunteering always involved getting dirty or getting puked on or having to entertain bored little kids by trying to assure them that digging trenches really is great fun.

“I’ve been volunteering for a few things for over a year now but it’s not volunteering in the sense I immediately think of, and up until recently I didn’t actually consider it volunteering at all.

“I never really considered them as volunteering posts for one simple reason; I do them for purely selfish reasons...”

*NOW CLOSED* Become a Digital Champion for chance to win an iPad

An iPad

If you're reading this now then you know how to use the internet. But did you know that there are nine million people in the UK who don't? For your chance to win an iPad, we'd like you to become a Digital Champion  - as part of the Race Online 2012 campaign to get the whole of the UK on the internet by the end of the Olympic year.

The Open University is one of more than 1,000 partners supporting the Race Online 2012 campaign to recruit Digital Champions to help people use the internet - and get the whole of the UK online by the end of next year.

For your chance to win an iPad, we'd like you to become a Digital Champion and pledge to get the UK online. As highlighted by Digital Champion Martha Lane Fox at the launch of the scheme, helping people online can reduce severe isolation, open up access to employment opportunities – and the learning opportunities which are the OU’s whole purpose – as well as save time, save money and open up a whole new way of looking at the world.

So, whether it's through donating your old equipment, pointing your neighbours to computer offers and  deals for the disadvantaged, or showing your grandma how to pay her gas bill online, we'd like you to get involved. And recruit more Digital Champions as you go.

Digital champion icon

For your chance to win an iPad, you need to do four things...

1) Join Platform's Race Online group (you'll need to be logged into Platform to do this, and you'll find the "join" link on the right hand side,  under the Race Online 2012 group heading).

2) Make your pledge by voting ‘Yes, I want to become a digital champion!’ in the Platform poll in the right hand column of the Race Online group.

3) Comment on this article - maybe tell us what you're doing or what you plan to do to help someone online? Or just tell us why you think the campaign's important. And please remember to comment in the Platform comment box, not the Facebook one, otherwise we won't be able to contact you if you win.

4) Hop over to the Pass IT on site and sign up officially to become a Digital Champion - and get access to all the tools you might need to help you.

On completing those tasks you'll be entered into a draw, the winner of which will receive an iPad - and the chance to blog for Platform about how they might use it as part of their pledge to be a Digital Champion.

Terms and conditions
This competition opens on 01/06/11 and closes on 05/07/2011. Prizes must be taken as offered and are not transferable or exchangeable for a cash equivalent. Only one entry per competition per person. This competition is open to everyone except members of the Open University's Communications Team. Entries must be received by 05 July 2011. The promoter accepts no responsibility for any entries that are incomplete, illegible, corrupted or fail to reach the promoter by the relevant closing date for any reason. The winner will be chosen and notified within 14 days by email to arrange delivery of the prizes. The name and home town of the winner will be published on Platform. The editor’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
