Yes you are right your tutor will be in touch by email (usually) ahead of the course in plenty of time before the start date. It's a good idea to keep checking student home as well for more information relating to your course, emails, forums.

Hi,
I'm also an OU newbie and it's good to know we have forums to support and network to hopefully gain some guidance from each other. I'm still awaiting tutor contact but also does anyone know what the practice essay at the end of block 1 unit 1 is based on? I've had a read through the TMA 01 info for the end of block 1 unit 4 but couldn't find the assignment section for the end of unit 1, have I missed an important section?!!
Best of luck to everybody!
Zoe
Rachel Coombe - Tue, 24/01/2012 - 13:16
Hello Zoe, as far as i'm aware you only do the assignment after you finish each block. So block one is made up of 4 units, we then do an assignment after that which gathers all the information we have learnt in the different units. I have just completed Unit one in Block one and it's really simple. All you do is jot down lots of notes as you're working through it.
You may be confusing practice essay with writing to your tutor? I recieved information about my tutor last week in my emails, so keep checking! It does also say it on the student home if you go to the heading marked Tutor, it then gives the contact details.
I hope this has helped, if not read page 8 in our Assesment Guide which came with the study pack. This explains what we have to do for our first assignment.

Hi everyone,
My name is Joanne and I am a new starter to K101. I haven't studied for 18 years so I am a little bit anxious about getting into the swing of things again (although I have just watched the welcome DVD and found it suprisingly inspiring).
I live in South Wales and hoping that not only will this course give me a sense of achievement, that it will also be a chance to make new friends.
All the best to everyone
Emma Chandler - Fri, 03/02/2012 - 23:34

Are you attending Cardiff on 18th Feb for the Tutorial? If so it would be good to meet up with you as I live just outside Cardiff.

Hi, I'm Sarah and I am starting the K101 course next week too!
I'm 31, married and have five lovely children of my own. I have decided to opt for a change of career hence joining the OU to enable me to do that. I currently design and make jewellery for my own business but due to my children ( three have disabilities, one of which that has a life limiting condition) I have a interest in health and community particuarly those of children and families.

hi. to sarah watson and everyone else on the k101 course. sarah you sound just like me, im a headless chicken too lol. I am totally new to studying and im a wee bit nervous but also very excited and confident il be just fine. I am a mum to 4 children eldest 14 the youngest 11 months, I work part time and have a supportive possible mental fiance at home with me, lol. I am hoping this course will be the start of something new and the beginings of a career for myself in social work.how is everyone fairing up so far? id love to know what other peoples aims are. are you excited as me?
Sarah Watson - Sat, 04/02/2012 - 20:51
I cant wait to get stuck in, feel as though I could ignor all thats going on around and get stuck in! What are you planning on doing nex Myree? Im not 100% sure. I have previously worked with children, mainly with special needs. A couple of times along side social services but that was all about 9 years ago! Im thinking about 2 things. One is a social worker, I'd really want to be able to make a difference but I'll know better about that one as time goes on I'm sure. The other is a midwife. Thats what I have always wanted to do but never got round to it!
Leah Powell - Wed, 01/02/2012 - 00:03
Hi everyone!
I am so glad to hear i'm not the only one feeling nervous! I think most of us are in the same boat. I'm a newbie too studying K101 starting on the 4th. I'm excited to learn about the course but nervous at the same time. It seems like we can have a lot of help & support both off each other & our tutor so hopefully we'll all be fine.
I'm 31 with no children. I live in South Wales & i'm currently working in my parents pub & in a youth club with kids from 8 to 16. I also volunteer at Parc Prison with Family support officers.
If all goes to plan i'm hoping to go onto study Childhood & Youth studies. Looking forward to studying & getting to know you all.
Good luck!
