What does the word ‘volunteering’ mean to you? That’s the question student blogger Carrie is asking in her latest entry for Platform as she reveals why she is a school governor, OUSA representative and Digital Champion supporting people get online…
“I somehow had it in my head that volunteering always involved getting dirty or getting puked on or having to entertain bored little kids by trying to assure them that digging trenches really is great fun.
“I’ve been volunteering for a few things for over a year now but it’s not volunteering in the sense I immediately think of, and up until recently I didn’t actually consider it volunteering at all.
“I never really considered them as volunteering posts for one simple reason; I do them for purely selfish reasons...”

I am a mobility engineer and my job requires me to repair and service mobility products for the disabled and elderly, such as wheelchairs, power chairs profile beds, hoists etc. on my travels I have had the good fortune to meet some lovely people and in couple of instances have helped and made notes for them to be able to access the internet for interests, but also to set up skype accounts so they are able to chat to relatives and friends in other parts of the globe. the internet is a fantastic place to be for these people in terms of interaction with the outside world or just catching up with friends!
I am self taught in the main though I did take You Your Computer and the Net as a module to finish of my OU degree. I'm now self employed, running small websites for local organisations who can't afford an expensive professional site and also recently ran a beginner's course in computing for those new to computing at a nearby school. Always willing to help and advise where I can. I think this site is great connecting everyone - there are loys of lonely people out there who would appreciate some online company if only they knew how.
