Hello everyone,
thought i would get the ball rolling with an introduction thread, so here goes...
I'm Mike, i am 35 years old. Have been studying law with the OU for the last 5 and a bit years, hoping to complete the LLB this october before moving onto the LPC next year, and with a bit of luck find my way into a career in law after that.
Been a difficult but not unenjoyable few years with the OU, i have absolutely no regrets at having undertaken this degree, and am glad and priveleged to have met a lot of good people here, both fellow students and tutors, and hopefully many more to come.
All the best,
Mike.

Hi,
I'm Juliette. I completed my LLB with the OU back in 2004, went on to do the LPC and complete a training contract and have been working in the not-for-profit sector providing specialist legal services ever since.
I've also had the pleasure of meeting some wonderful people through the OU and am constantly amazed by the real sense of community that can be found here; long may it continue and grow!
Take care,
J
Hi Juliette and Mike
My name is Adele, I am doing the W100 course at the moment. I am not sure if I should continue to complete the LLB degree with OU after this course. The reason is that I don't know how much companies value OU law graduate. Would you mind telling me someting about your job hunting experience? I am really in a dilemma now, as I am really really enjoying my course at the moment and really want to continue this degree and complete it, but if companies don't value OU graduates, it will be a shame.
Many thanks for any advice
Adele
a lot of people ask themselves this question, including me, i would say only this. the ou law degree is a law degree like any other, and i have known a number of students who have gone on to successfully become practicing solicitors, and i have known a couple of course tutors who went through this route to successful careers in law. i think in law you will probably find as with any other profession that some employers will hold prejudices while others wont, but i dont think the open university really comes in for any special discriminatory treatment. if you achieve the law degree with the ou you have covered the same ground as any other university.

Hi
My name is Mrs Arsine' Khatchaturians and I am 49years old, an also LLB student, taking W200 at the moment. I enjoy my studies, but I don’t think 1 tutorial a month is enough, I like to have the opportunity to discuss the course material

Hi
I've doing an open degree, which, includes w100. I would like the Diploma in English law but not 100% sure I should go for it, as, I'm not a confident person. Although w100 was difficult at times I did enjoy it.
How did other people find the Diploma in English law?
Thank you for any feedback.
hi catherine,
i found that the law courses do get progressively more difficult, but that there is a natural progression from course to course. w100 is more than a good warm up to progress onto w200 the first course of the diploma, and many of the concepts in w200 are familiar from w100, just gone into in more depth.

Ian, 40, Devon. Starting with Y166 and then W100...
Hi I'm Debs from Manchester ...starting the Y166 in Sep to continue onto W100 in Feb. I have just turned 40 and they do say life begins.....:)
good luck to all starting your law studies with y166 in september :-)

hi am Paula and i'm... feel at this point i should say alcoholic but i'm not, i'm a Y166 student. Found the first few weeks quite interesting and looking forward to completing this and going on to the W100 in Feb. Staying out in the sticks of Ayrshire means support from other students is hard as it's a trek to Glasgow for meetings etc. but with the help and support from a great partner and kids i'm sure i can do it.
Hi Paula
i'm on the same course and like you should be going onto W100....i'm just trying to do TMA 1 !!!!!! its hard with 3 kids.....since you're in a similar situation, its made me feel better......
Hi Mainuma how did you get on with TMA 1?? I managed to scrape through. Got the information required just didn't add enough Acts and cases. It was a bit of a disappointment as I put a lot of effort into it but at least I know for my TMA 2 which route I need to take and learn from my mistakes. Still finding the course interesting and looking forward to going on to W100 next year.

Hi
I am going to start with W100 instead of y166, do you think w100 is the right course to start law or y100? have i chosen right course? please any advice I would appreciate.
Farid
Hi
i'm actually new to this and just joined today......i'm doing Y166....as i felt less confident going back to studying.....my 1st assignment is due next week.....i am hoping to on to W100....
hi
i am currently doing the w100 course and would recommend it as a starting point. I work at a soliccitors firm and so I thought I would skip the course before this and am glad that I did as this course is a brilliant start to the Law degree
I am quite disappointed that no body replied to my greetings and question in here!! is it normal ?
Hi Farid
Welcome to the OU and Platform!! It's always hard deciding on the best course to start with. I'm sure some current students will comment on here soon to give you some guidance. Once the forums start for those in your tutor group it would be a good idea to chat with them too.

Hi Farid,
Having just completed Y166 myself, I would recommend that you begin with this course if you have no prior knowledge of the legal system. It gives you a basic understanding and prepares you well for W100.
I hope this helps?
Sarah
Hi Sarah
I'm pleased to meeting you here and many thanks for your helpful advice,
hope to hear from you time to time and wish you all the best in your studies.
Farid
Hi Jenny
good to meeting you and thanks for your advice.

Hi
My name is Brendan (34 years old) and I'm starting the y166 course on the 1st Nov.This is my first course and to be honest it will be the first time I've studied since school, and I did'nt do to alot of studying there either!!!:-)
I've recieved my books and letters but I just want to know is there anything I should be doing in the mean time, or do I have to wait for my tutor to get in touch with me first?
Brendan.
Hi Brendan, like you it had been a few years since studying but the Y166 is a great course to ease you back into. Hope you are enjoying it so far.
Hi everyone,
My name's Adam, 40 from Wirral. I'm starting W100 in February. My original plan was to do a law degree straight after 6th form, so I'm a little bit late!
My career until I had to give up work due to MS was quite heavily involved with the law, until latterly I was a manager in a firm of solicitors.
I'm really looking forward to starting - could anyone tell me when the details of books etc. are posted? Like Brendan, I have to ask, what should I be doing in preparation?
Hi Adam
Good luck with your studies (its nice to know Im not the only 40 yr old!!!) Im just doing the Y166 and onto the W100 in feb
Hi Adam, a good old Wirralonian here too (although now stay on west coast of Scotland in a wee village). You should receive your books a few weeks after applying, have a read through them all and get accustomed to the terminology before your first greeting call from your tutor. Enjoy the course!
Thanks Paula; got the first set of books last week.
Fascinating stuff!
Hello everyone.
My name is Chris, 28, from Barking in East London.
I am beginning W100 in February with a view to getting a qualifying law degree in the next few years.
I am looking to cover ground quickly, if possible, and wondered if anyone had any advice on which, if any, of the compulsory modules could be done at the same time without causing too much confusion and/or overload?
It is nice to see some people who will be on the same course. Once the W100 books come through would anyone be interested if I were to open some new threads to discuss some of the content?
Also (kind of the theme of most of the questions on this forum) does anyone know what, if anything, we should be doing to prepare for the course?
Thats enough crazy demands for now.
Thanks for listening
Chris
Hi Chris,
Paula gave a tip: Read through the material before your tutor calls, to get used to the terminology.
I think threads specifically for us newbies would be great - I've found that people with a more advanced knowledge can forget that we can be a bit dense sometimes, whereas we'll be able to put stuff into words of one syllable or less!
Seriously, I do think they would be a good idea - if one of us (ie me) gets stuck, we can help each other out.
