Hi

I think I know but forget the "o"

Maybe my aunts can help me?

Perhaps this will also help?

"I take it you already know
Of tough and bough and cough and dough?
Others may stumble, but not you
On hiccough, thorough, slough, and through.
Well done! And now you wish, perhaps,
To learn of less familiar traps.
Beware of heard, a dreadful word
That looks like beard but sounds like bird.
And dead: it's said like bed, not bead,
For goodness sake don't call it deed!
Watch out for meat and great and threat
(They rhyme with suite and straight and debt).
A moth is not a moth in mother
Nor both in bother, or broth in brother,
And here is not a match for there,
Nor dear and fear, for bear and pear.
And then there's dose and rose and lose--
Just look them up and goose and choose
And cork and work and card and ward
And font and front and word and sword
And do and go, then thwart and cart,
Come, come! I've hardly made a start.
A dreadful Language? Why man alive!
I learned to talk it when I was five.
And yet to write it, the more I tried,
I hadn't learned at fifty-five."

Or maybe not!

Les Haworth - Sun, 04/09/2011 - 15:28

Ha

I got the help I needed from my Aunts as they are just a bunch of "old women"

I guess I am on the right ish lines

I had a bit of a laugh anyway with these women before catching the train home at West Wittering (must stop that) station

I knew this was a fishy problem

Pity you didn't hook some more spratts like me

Ha

Les

Kells Mac - Wed, 19/10/2011 - 13:12

well done. The 5 letter word is a good un. Would you like any clues to help at all? still working on the potatoe one.... very hard

Les Haworth - Thu, 20/10/2011 - 00:05

Hi Kells

A clue for the five letter word would be useful

Les

Kells Mac - Mon, 24/10/2011 - 14:27

Hi Les. The only clue I can give you will make almost give you then answer. I take you realise which letters are missing out of the alphabet?

H I J K L M N O... so the clue is think of a chemical symbol!!!!

Les Haworth - Wed, 26/10/2011 - 22:43

Hi

Chemistry aint my strong point (What is you may ask?)

How about "atoms"

As you say the clue is a bit of a givaway (Or is it?)

Les

Matthew Newman - Wed, 26/10/2011 - 22:56

I'm still betting on 'inert' :P

Kells Mac - Thu, 27/10/2011 - 09:32

So

H I J K L M N O

thses missing letters gives you the answer. Think of a chemical symbol... Which ones do you know?

Kells Mac - Thu, 27/10/2011 - 09:31

Take whats missing from ther alphabet....

H I J K L M N O.... These missing letters gives you the answer that you need.

Matthew Newman - Thu, 27/10/2011 - 13:02

Okay, last ditch effort: 'WATER'

Kells Mac - Fri, 28/10/2011 - 13:10

YES it is water but why?

Kells Mac - Mon, 31/10/2011 - 09:47

I'm struggling with the potato one. ggggrrrrrrrrr

Matthew Newman - Wed, 19/10/2011 - 00:51

With out looking farther down the thread, my guess would be because it's comprised of irregular phonetics; ie. "gh" = "f", much as 'tough' ends in an 'f' sound.  Need I Google? :P

Kells Mac - Wed, 19/10/2011 - 13:15

Hi Matt. It is to dow with how certain words are spelt differently to how we say it.

As in COUGH... yes the gh is an f.. but we dont spell it COUF. Have a go at this

ABCDEFGPQRSTUVWXYZ

- - - - -

What is the 5 letter word???

Matthew Newman - Wed, 19/10/2011 - 20:02

...and yes, that's what I was talking about with "phonetics".  (sorry, the 'reply' button at the end of each post temporarily eluded me) :P

Matthew Newman - Tue, 25/10/2011 - 21:44

...or pehraps it's craftier still, and it's 'inert'

Matthew Newman - Wed, 19/10/2011 - 20:00

Okay, does it have to go in order from A to Z?  If not 'QUEST' but that seems a little obvious.

Kells Mac - Mon, 24/10/2011 - 14:28

I take it you realise what is missing from the Alphabet? The missing letters are the answer? Good luck

Matthew Newman - Tue, 25/10/2011 - 21:40

My best bet, in this case, is 'gases'.

Matthew Newman - Tue, 25/10/2011 - 21:47

Okay, apologies, my answers are all over the place... please recognize the intended sequence of posting.
