Hi andy
yes i guess you will be busy! but you'll enjoy it, as there are so many areas in psychology whats not to enjoy, and yes we should help each other out that would be great, im hoping to go into either adult psychology or criminology later down the line something challenging either way, wish you good luck but as we say we can help each other out, my materials arrived today but i wasnt in when it was being delivered so they left a note so theyre coming tomorrow, really looking forward to it, good luck anyway and keep in touch

Charlene Brown - Thu, 04/08/2011 - 19:22
Hi Everyone,
I'm beginning with Introduction to Social Sciences DD101, however I'm waiting on my qualifications coming through from my college course. I done an HNC in childcare and Education and the university may let me begin with Exploring Psychology... However, I don't know if I want to do this, as I don't know if I should begin with Social Sciences to get me used to doing the course work again as it has been 10 years since I last was active in course work....
Has anyone else been in this situation? Any advice?
Charlene x
Andy Fraser - Wed, 10/08/2011 - 14:10
Hi Charlene,
I wanted to start with Exploring Psychology and spoke to an advisor who suggested doin Y183 Starting with Psychology to get used to studying again. I recently completed NVQ 3 in Substance Misuse (for work) so wanted to start off pretty easy with my degree. I think we will have to do Social sciences at level 1 at some point but I wanted to do a bit of the Psychology stuff first. Hope this helps...?
Andy x
Charlene Brown - Mon, 15/08/2011 - 21:31
hey andy,
Thanks for the advice. Spoke to the OU careers team about it and because I have completed the HNC, I don't need to do level 1, so I am now beginning DSE212 in Oct 11!!! Don't know wot I'm thinking, it's been a while since I last studied!! ha ha!!!

Hi Everyone,
Just enrolled on my first OU course - Y183.
I haven't studied since school & even then didn't apply myself greatly. Very nervous about studying part time while juggling a full time job - can anyone give me advice on working full time and studying in spare time...IS IT EVEN POSSIBLE??? :)
Thanking you in advance.
Corrin x
Andy Fraser - Sun, 14/08/2011 - 08:46
Hi Corrin,
Are you starting Y183 on the 1st of September? I start it then so if you want to keep in touch to help each other out then feel free to get in touch. I also work full time in the substance misuse field so I'm a bit worried about fitting the study in. I'm hopefully going to try and finish this one by the end of October as I start DSE141 on the 5th November. An adviser told me this was quite a chilled course to start off with so fingers crossed it should be ok! What is it you do if you don't mind me asking?
Andy x
Corrin Johnson - Mon, 15/08/2011 - 15:39
Hi Andy,
Thanks for replying - I didn't know you had until I came on here, do you know of a way I can get notifications sent to my email so I know when someone has replied? Bit of a nightmare trying to find it again!
It's be great to keep in touch with someone who's in the same situation - I'm really worried about juggling everything.
I was made redundant 3 weeks ago, so have been looking for work and have got a temp job sorted but it's not something I'll want to stay in long term so with doing this course I have to find permanent employment.. Not ideal but I'm trying to make it work!
Your job sounds interesting, i'd love to do something like that in my day to day career.
Are you doing the starter course to go onto a degree or..?
The countdown begins!!! HOW EXCITING! :)
Corrin x
Andy Fraser - Mon, 15/08/2011 - 16:39
Hi Corrin,
I know what you mean that its difficult finding things on this site. Top tip, any page you use which is useful i.e forums etc. copy the link in your main browser bar at the top of your browser, then click studenthome... at the bottom on the left you'll find personal links... if you click edit links it will take you to another page with your links on it...! Click the 'add link' button then paste the link into it that you copied...give it a title then click save... you should find that page link everytime you go to your studenthome...! Also, have you joined all the groups relating to your subject? Click the 'your subject' tab at the top... find Psychology and maybe Social sciences and click join (if you haven't already)...! I will find out how you setup email alerts... I don't think it works for platform,or maybe I just haven't found it yet.
I'm starting with a short course so I can get used to studying again... my main goal is my BSc in Criminology and Psychological studies... how about you?
My email is:
andyf3050@gmail.com
if that makes things any easier..! Maybe were gonna be doing the same courses..?
Don't worry, I'm sure you'll be able to fit your studying into your day to day stuff...! I'll probably try and setup some online student get-togethers for everyone on the same courses... hopefully more people will be up for this if it helps...?
Keep in touch,
Andy...x

Hi, I think I am the only person here who is not actually going to study Psychology as such. I am doing Childhood and Youth Studies or Health & Social Care, but as a free choice module I am going to study D171 Introduction to Counselling in Octobre 2011. I would love to meet anybody else who is studying D171. You can get me on facebook too, I am on the Open University group, also a few of the general OU/chillout groups. I look forward to hearing from you .
Callie Willows - Wed, 24/08/2011 - 18:38
Hi Helen
I'm going to be starting Introduction to Counselling in October, alongside Exploring Psychology, if you want someone to chat about it with :)
Helen Rutter - Wed, 24/08/2011 - 21:59
I probably will do when the time comes. I have been told mixed things about the course, but I am looking forward to it and will do my best to enjoy it.
Lisa Wood - Tue, 30/08/2011 - 13:21
Hi to everyone who is studying psychology this season with the O.U. My name is Lisa. I am about to embark on studying for the first time in years and have decided to study DD101 starting Oct, and also DD141 Introduction to psychology starting in Nov. looking forward to the challenge and getting involved with some of you in discussion through the forums etc. I am unsure yet as to what either of these courses entail as I have not yet received the info or study materials. I am finding the info on line very interesting and have invested in a book called The science Of Mind And Behaviour By Richard Gross, this book may be of relevance to a lot of people studying Psychology as it contains a lot of sources and research material, it is not a book to be undertaken lightly but is a great help to anyone studying in this particular field. Will speak to many of you in the future I am sure. Good luck to all fellow students, Lisa.
Carol Baverstock - Fri, 02/09/2011 - 15:02
Hi I'm Carol, aged 39 and starting the Openings course in Psychology. I am terrified. I suffer with severe depression and am house/bed bound by it.
Hello to everyone - especially those on my course xx
Louise Wellard - Wed, 12/10/2011 - 15:28
Hi Carol
Just wanted to wish you all the best for your course... I'm starting in Nov as well & I'm sure we will all have some great discussions on such a facinating topic.

Lisa Wood - Sat, 03/09/2011 - 14:39
Hi Carol, I just wanted you to know that even if your depression keeps you house bound this is most definately a great place to start. My friend michelle has suffered from all kinds of ailments from strokes and severe trauma through a road accident and now has severe aggrophobia and will no longer go out.Infact she hasn't left her flat for years. Alike you she has a world at her fingertips and has been studying for the last few years. To be perfectly honest with you it has not only given her hope but has made her an altogether happier and content person, the fears have not left her but it has definately made a difference to her well being. Sometimes people will not understand where you are coming from as I am sure you know, I have seen my friend go through this and I wish you the best of luck with your studies. Lisa.

I'm starting DSE 141 in November and live in Edinburgh. I'm on Facebook so would be interested in joining a group - not sure I can actually start one but if someone else wants to or can tell me what to do, I'm happy to help.
Andy, I'm down to do B07 Bsc Psychology but am still undecided because Criminology and Psychological Studies kind of appeals to me too. Part of me's inclined to think I'd have a broader base career-wise if I stick with the general Psychology degree but I'd be really interested to discuss Criminology any time.
In general I've made some notes based on what I've read about the module, in particular Part 1 on Why People Harm Others. When I started getting into it I realised there are more facets to the idea of harm than I originally thought.
Can't wait for my study materials to be delivered.
Louise Wellard - Wed, 12/10/2011 - 15:26
Hi Amanda....good luck with your studies, I am also starting on DSE141 in November. I thought I would recommend a great book for you to read taking into account your interest in Criminology : 'The Gift of Fear' by Gavin De Becker... You can buy it off Amazon 2nd hand for a couple of pound. Facinating book....
Regards
Louise

Hi everyone,
I'm also starting the DSE141 course in November. I'm 20 years old and had to take a 1 year break from studying due to travelling. I am very excited about doing this! Good to know that there are so many other students out there to keep in touch with. It should definitely make things easier. I just joined the group on facebook which will hopefully make the communication easier. Good luck to everyone and feel free to contact me.Agnes xxx

Hi Anges,
It is good to see some fellow young students taking this module. I am 18 and am also studying DSE141 in November. I am really looking forward to it, but am also very apprihensive, as I have never actually studied the subject before, having just come out of a diploma in animal management (call me crazy!)
How much experiance do you have on the subject? Am I alone in my madness?
I look forward to following this forum.
