Why S104?

A thread for discussion - what's prompted you to start S104?  Career change?  Subject of interest?

For me, I was never great at science - only taking Physics and scraping a "C" Grade O Level.  As I've gotten older though, I've started to wonder more about the world around me (my kids are at GCSE-taking age and its frustrating that I can't answer their questions!)

My plan is to continue science studies beyond S104 - chemistry and physics sound interesting.  Perhaps take all subjects as far as the BSc in Natural Sciences.  Early days yet!  I'd like to think a career change could come about, but at 41 I might be a little "past it"!

How about you?

Yep, I too am ultimately looking to get that science degree I always wanted...costs permitting of course!

I was always decent at Maths at school but mediocre with the sciences even though I was always interested. Guess I couldn't be doing with the detail. Hmm.. Older and more determined now!!

Hello,

I hope 41 isn't past it. At 47 I decided to take a new(ish) direction, to focus on Physics, which was my only real interest at school.

Since school, did an HNC in Electrical and Electronic engineering, have had a variety of jobs in a variety of disciplines and have been a full time carer for my partner for the last 5 years. My interests are reading, art, poetry, cooking, philosophy, invention and current affairs.

Regards

Charlie

 Hi everyone

I hope 41 isn't past it either!

I've always had an interest in plants. My Dad loved gardening and got me into turning the soil from a young age. After school, I went into office type work, keeping gardening as a hobby.  I decided I needed to make a career change a few years ago and I've been working in horticulture for about 6 years now. I completed my RHS certificate a few years back and the aim (eventually) is gain a degree in Natural Science and S104 is part of that route. Ultimately I'd like to be involved in crop science research.

Hello everyone

You are all mere youngsters  -  I'm 64 and definitely past it!

Having devoted my entire education and career to Arts and Humanities, I thought it was time to try to redress the balance. (I dropped Physics and Chemistry in 1961 and failed Biology 'O' level in 1963).

I'm starting to think maybe I should have left it at that, as S104 is definitely challenging.  I have more time than most of you (I'm retired), but fewer brain cells, so it's hard work.

Gail, your career path sounds interesting - I did think about doing the RHS Certificate myself, but settled for a City & Guilds Patchwork and Quilting instead!

Regards,

Chris

I think it's brilliant studying a new subject at 64, Charis.  I think the OU is "for life"!  I hope you find the course (and the forum once we get going) useful!

I'm afraid I didn't set out to pick S104, but having done a few science short courses with the OU, S104 was the next logical step in getting to a Bsc Natural Science!

Despite having chosen it only out of necessity, I'm actually really enjoying the course and I think it is giving me a good grounding in maths and science from which to move on to Level 2 study.
