Join the egg hunt for chance to win £250 in OU module vouchers *NOW CLOSED*

Platform’s inviting you to join an egg hunt with the chance of winning £250 in OU module vouchers.

Easter eggs
There are eight eggs hidden across Platform and each of them boasts a letter. Find the eight eggs, rearrange them to spell a word and then send an email to platform-competitions@open.ac.uk by no later than Friday 27 April 2012.

Please make the subject of your email ‘Egg hunt comp 2012’ and include your answer, full name and address. Correct entries will all be entered into a draw and the winner will receive £250 in OU module vouchers, to spend at their leisure.

All the eggs can be found on Platform, the OU's community website, but to make it a bit easier, as this is such a big site, with each egg there’ll be a clue included to help you find the next one. We’ll also be linking to other Open University websites where relevant, to help flag up useful resources, but all eggs can be found on Platform only.

Here’s the first clue to get you started… if you were thinking about changing jobs or honing your interview skills, you’d probably take a look at this page.

This competition opens on 22/03/12 and closes on 27/04/2011. Prizes must be taken as offered and are not transferable or exchangeable for a cash equivalent. Only one entry per person. This competition is open to all except employees of The Open University. Entries must be received by 27 April 2012. I am currently studying towards a BA Honours English Literature degree but wish to change to a BA Honours English Language and Literature degree. I have check that my completed modules count towards the new degree but can't find how to change my qualification in progress. Can it be done via student home or do I need to contact learner support?

Advice needed re Fibromyalgia

I've been study with the OU since 2008 and up until this year was doing really well. In march I failed a module for the first time due to trying to manage a full time job and the course whilst suffering from a variety of symptoms including extreme tiredness and widespread pain.

I found out yesterday that I have fibromyalgia and I'm just wondering how other sufferers cope with the condition. I have cut my hours at work but only by one less day a week. Unfortunately I can't afford to reduce my hours any more.

I would appreciate any advice anyone can offer in managing their studies together with work and this condition.

Thank you.

Jo

Unsure what to take to complete my open degree

So I already have 35 credits from short level 1 modules and 60 credits from K101. I am currently doing S142 (30 credits), SK277 (30 credits) and S320 (30 credits).

I am just learning that science, biology, just isn't me. I will be taking E217 (60 credits) this October and E313 next October (60 credits) so I have 30 credits to find from level 2 + 3 or 60 credits from level 3.

I am thinking E233 + SD329, total 60 credits or DD301, total 60 credits. I'm hearing that if you have done SK277 you don't really need to do SD329 but I'd like to do E233 but that leaves me with finding a 30 credit level 3 module which is impossible, so thinking DD301 will be my best bet.

Anyone got opinions on the above modules or any others I should look at?

Referencing Nightmare!!

 Hi all!

I could really do with some advice on referencing. This is for my ema. I am wanting to reference in text but unsure if I have to write the author's name every time I cite? Most of the first references are from the same author and I have already used (Silva, 2009, p.311) so in the next reference can I just put (2009, p.311) or (2009, p.320) etc. Do I have to write the name every time and use up valuable word count? I cannot remember!! grrr!

I am rather confused! a swift reply would be great as I am currently writing thie ema!

Thanks in advance

Sharon

How did you find the PGCE with Open University as opposed to any other university?

I'm hoping to study the PGCE in Secondary Science Chemistry with The Open University. I know majority of it is distance learning, but we have to do 2 placements in consecutive blocks.

Has anyone completed this program? How did they find it?

Someone told me recently, that if I wish to study for the PGCE, then I should do it via the traditional 9 month route full time, or not do it at all, simply because it is a lot of hard work and requires tremendous focus. They strongly discouraged me from doing a distance learning course through the Open University.

What do you think of this?

Referencing and Trotsky

My tutor came up to me at the end of a tutorial and asked about my referencing. He was concerned that using references mentioned in an OU textbook should not be entered as direct references. I said it was OK as I had been to the local Uni library and read the actual paper.

“Ah” he said, “that explains why you have written outside the OU text”. “You need to keep your answers tightly scripted to the OU text and not use readings outside this”. “I can’t give you marks for that extraneous work”

“Oh’ I said.

“Yes, you see it’s an equality issue, it’s unfair on those who do not have library facilities.”

I was just wondering is this a local socialist equal opportunity view – working to the lowest denominator; or is this corporate OU speaking?

And why is there a bunch of papers and books at the end of each chapter labeled ‘further reading’.
