With many new courses starting in February, there´s probably quite a few newbies out there - or people who haven´t studied with the OU for a while. So this is your chance to come say hi!

Hey there fellow newbies! I am one of the Platform web editors and I became a new OU student in February. I'm doing A174 Start Writing Fiction and although I struggle to find the time, I'm really enjoying it so far. Having worked at the OU for nearly 18 months I should know more about the OU student journey than most newbies but it's still daunting sharing your work with fellow students, getting to grips with things like FirstClass and StudentHome etc and wondering if you're doing it all right. If you want to follow my progress - my first TMA is due next week and I haven't even thought about it yet, eek - then check out my blog on Platform. And feel free to share your tips, experiences and concerns on Platform too - us newbies need to stick together! Best of luck, Robyn

New to the OU, I'm doing two maths courses, and finding the whole thing slightly intimidating, but it's good to find a usable forum to chat in :)

Hi, I'm new to the OU and starting my course (DD121) in May. Although my initial study is psychology I'm studying an introduction to the social sciences. I'm excited about starting the course but have some reservations in terms of 'getting it right'. I've read 'good essay writing' and 'social sciences: the big issues' which have been very good and informative, particularly the latter. Anyway, I'm all fired up now to 'better myself' and better educated. Can I do it? Yes I can!
Chris.

Hi,

I am starting the OU for the first time in May also ( studying dd131). I also have reservations of 'getting it right' and am worrying about what to expect :s

I am currently studying Psychology at college so hopefuly that will help a bit.

I think I may have to brush up a bit on the social sciences before May. Have you read anything in particular that has helped you get fired up for study??

Hi! Am so glad I'm finally starting my studies. I'm taking MST121 and MS221 and one month in my head already aches!!!!Guess it's just like trying to get a muscle back into shape, once it's gets used to being active again the initial aches and pain will get better.

ElizabethB - Sun, 08/03/2009 - 13:02

Hi, I'm new to all this. I'm tackling an introductory course - Introducing the Environment. I'm really interested in the subject, and also want to know if I'm capable of studying at a higher level. Planning my time is the BIG problem - I retired last year so this should be easy, but so many other things are crying out for attention. However, the subject matter is keeping me well motivated for now.

Hi everyone, My name is George and I am from Cyprus. I've started studying with the OU last September, and I haven't done any studying for 18 years since I've started this.
Is there anyone from Cyprus or Greece?

AlanSmith - Thu, 19/03/2009 - 18:03

I'm Alan and come from Cellardyke in the Kingdom of Fife though it is now over 30 years since I lived there. I worked in Edinburgh for 27 years before taking early retirement and moving to Thailand to live at the age of 50 in 2005.

The OU courses available to me in Thailand are limited to a fairly restrictive number of short courses, though fortunately a few of these are in astronomy, my prime area of interest.

I've just passed S194 and am now studying S196. I plan to tackle two short courses from May before attempting a full BSc in astronomy with the University of Central Lancashire from October.

I am also new to open uni-started dd100 understanding social change last october so nearly finished now-its been very challenging as back to writing essays after soooooo long!! have a baby which makes it that bit harder but not impossible- have got a great routine and look upon this as "me" time- would definately recommend this course as relates to everything we experience living in society- has definately changed the way i understand stuff-yes its been difficult but i am intending to continue and hope to go on to a degree in criminology/social policy-its one of the best decisions i have ever made!!!

Hi guys,
I am Hathairat, from Thailand. I am doing my Open Degree here in the OU. The first course , which sarted in February, I am doing is Design and Designing. Is there anyone taking German course? It interests me. But I would like to know if it is worth taking. Oh, and Creative Writing, too. I have read some reviews and it sounds great. But using English as the second language pushes me off a bit. Thanks!
Nice to meet you.

Belinda Winters - Mon, 15/06/2009 - 18:58

Hi.... I am brand new at the OU having only recieved my prospectus today, would love any input from people who are seasoned at this. I work at a day care facility for the elderly and have three teen children who I am raising alone. My question is this.... Is it possible to work part time, raise children and still fulfill my dream of studying Pschology? Any advice greatly appreciated : )

Belinda.

pottsy - Wed, 17/06/2009 - 15:11

Hi belinda

I work with older people too in housing , i have 2 small children and work 4 days a week, it is a challenge , but I plan my time well and have 2 study sessions each week and sometimes read a bit at night , it is so interesting that I haven't found it a problem, I have found that because i have chosen what I want to study it isn't so difficult.

Good luck with it , DD121 is a great place to start as it eases you in to study :)

bonavanda - Fri, 19/06/2009 - 18:59
