Hi,
I'm Louise Heys a newbie to OU from Ormskirk in Lancashire. I start AA100 Arts, Past and Present in October with a view to doing BA Humanties with Art History.
I'm very excited, been in Continuing ed since I turned the big 4 Oh! I gave up my career in Travel to do part time adult continuing education courses at Liverpool Uni where I got hooked into adult learning. The time is now right for me to aim for a full degree.
Anyone else from Liverpool, Southport area doing Arts, Past and Present?

Hi Louise I'm Maria i'm from Maidenhead via Cornwall I am starting the AA100 in October too. Have you heard who your tutor is I'm starting to panic but I will suss it out. I'm 45 I have two grown up sons and a full time job.

The job is at a Framing Shop so I have lots of time with no customers so I'll have lots of time to read up on the subjects. Well I have too finish dinner now so I'll go.

Good Luck and feel free to contact me if you just need to blow off steam or to talk somethings through.

Hi Louise,

I'm over the water on the Wirral and doing AA100. This is a first for me, turning 40 next year so must be my mid-life crisis kicking in. Excited but freaking out a little! Just bought my books figure I'm gonna need a dictionary too. Just set my desk up with motivational post-its everywhere to keep me going, oh and the coffee machine is a must. Good luck everyone!

Hi my name is Geoff from Exeter. I am starting in September two Openings courses -Y157 Understanding Society and Y178 Understanding Health. I have not studied for double figure years since my nurse training. I am keen but apprehensive, the information and help given is excellent. I have a disability but I am determined to succeed. I am encouraged by the comments given in this Platform comments blog.

Hey, i'm new to the OU and i'm starting my course in October. My first course is The arts past and present (AA100 09J).I'm feeling a little nervous about starting but i'm looking forward to the challenge. Ive just completed my A levels at college and im nervously just waiting for the results to come. I'm looking forward to meeting some people who are also on the same course and it will be nice to speak to current OU students to see their opinions on studying with the OU.

Hi, I'm Yvonne from Cumbria. I've just finished SK183, Understandng Nutrition, which was great. I was very nervous when I started, it was the first time I'd studied anything since leaving school in 1993. I've just signed up for Introducing Health Science, A Case Study Approach, and I'm hoping to do Understanding Cancer next, followed by Challenging Obesity, to get my Certificate in Health Science. Its hard work sometimes, trying to find time to study, with an 18 month old baby, but I'm managing so far (I think). I've just discovered these forums, so look forward to chatting with you all.

Hello Elizabeth, I am new to the OU (from October last) and doing U116 in Exeter.  I am also new to this forum business and on line chatting.  We have not really managed to get any self help groups started, so you are the first person I have come across doing the same course outside our little group.

I am finishing off TMA 04 at the moment and polishing up my gorilla report - how have you managed with this?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Adrian

Hi I'm Debbi, I'm starting the B680 Course "Certificate in Accounting" as the beginning of my open Degree, in September 2009. I am terrified and am hoping I'm doing the right thing. Have worked in payroll/accounts for most of my working life (about 20 years)so it's just a natural progession really. I'm from Gloucestershire (so near to the border with Wales) and work part time in local govt.

Hi everyone, I'm Jennifer and I'm from Glasgow. I'm due to start course DS871 in November and this will be my first attempt at home learning. I got a 2.2 from Napier and with the economy the way it is I thought I'd better keep up the education so my knowledge doesn't go out of date while the economy recovers. I decided to study with the OU because I have multiple disabilities and it made sense to stay at home and study in my own time instead of struggling to fit into other peoples timetables.

Hi im new to the O.U. having just completed a foundation degree in psychology and sociology, am now working towards a hons degree in social sciences and am doing a social psychology course in February 2010 critical thinking of self and others.

jurassic_mark - Tue, 08/09/2009 - 21:42

Hello all, I've just (well, July) completed 'Making Sense of the Arts' which was the first real academic study I've done for thirty years (and that was only at GC(S)E'O'level). Despite being fairly confident I would enjoy the course I was not prepared for the pleasure it brought me and I am now very impatient to get started on 'The Arts Past and Present' early next month. I am doing this purely for the pleasure of learning, which I suppose takes the pressure off me somewhat.

Think I'll enjoy being a student!

Kat-Lim - Wed, 16/09/2009 - 09:36

Hello all, I am starting the D853 - Identity in Question - course in November 2009. I am interested in taking more courses in the future to qualify for an M.Phil in Psychology. I am currently living and working in Thailand and hope to be able to cope with the needs of the course.

joski - Wed, 23/09/2009 - 21:18

Hi all
I've just signed up to do the B625 Winning Resources and Support course to complement my job in fundraising and hopefully give me a step up. I'm very daunted about the whole thing (more about getting to grips with the amount of online groups, blogs etc than the actual study!) and wondering when I'm going to fit the study in between my job and my kids! I'd be really interested in getting to know any fellow students who are also doing this course so we can panic together!!!

EmmaAsbury - Tue, 29/09/2009 - 14:47

Hiya all. I am starting The arts past and present in a couple of weeks and to say that I am nervous is an understatement!! I sooo want to do well and give it my best shot but being almost 30 years old and not studied since school I feel a little overwhelmed.
I am so glad there is this place to come and meet other people who are going through the same as me. My family havent been the most supportive of people, telling me its a waste of time etc - but I am determind to do this..
xx

me3439 - Mon, 20/09/2010 - 07:06

Hello Emma,

I h too am starting the AA100 in October. My name is Maria and i'm 45. Don't worry about it if you really want to do it you will I had some excellent advise from another student AbsentNormality he/she said to write in list form why you want to do the course, read through the course companion and familiarize yourself with the work needed you will need to study all the chapters but some not so deeply as others also I found making a time table helped but keep it loose incase some thing crops up things you don't expect can help you get in the mood for study I found that listening to Classic FM on Sunday morning while i did my housework put in the mood to look through my course work and start arranging things, I like classical music but have never listened to Classic FM.

Good Luck. Maria.

Hey All,

Another newbie here. I start M150 next week and I'm really looking forward to it. I decided to skip A-levels and the traditional Uni road (*coughs* - debt) so instead I'll be trying to balance this with work, climbing, music and scouting!

It ain't called life for nothing - get out and live it :)
