I'm hoping to study the PGCE in Secondary Science Chemistry with The Open University. I know majority of it is distance learning, but we have to do 2 placements in consecutive blocks.

Has anyone completed this program? How did they find it?

Someone told me recently, that if I wish to study for the PGCE, then I should do it via the traditional 9 month route full time, or not do it at all, simply because it is a lot of hard work and requires tremendous focus. They strongly discouraged me from doing a distance learning course through the Open University.

What do you think of this?

In any PGCE you do, the most important thing will be your school placements - the theory is generally not that helpful in my (and many other teachers') opinion.

So it is unlikely to make that much difference really I would have thought - except that I believe with the OU you have to find your own placements, rather than them being found for you.
