Policy and public affairs

John D'Arcy, Mary O'Shea and Dominic ChilcottWe work to help shape higher education and related public policy to support part-time higher education and the needs of flexible, part-time learners in Ireland, as well as promoting the work and mission of The Open University.

We do this by engaging with the Minister and his officials at the Department for Education and Skills, as well as Teachta Dála at the Houses of the Oireachtas, Dáil Éireann’s Committee for Education and Skills, and officials from other government departments.

We respond to consultations, provide information and briefings to politicians and policymakers, and raise the profile of our work through initiatives and events namely around widening participation, research and innovation, and economic development.

The Open University maintains excellent relationships with the Higher Education Authority (HEA) and Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) on issues of policy, development and quality assurance in higher education.

We are also members of Universities Ireland, a body which works to develop and promote cooperation among its member universities on the island of Ireland. The Open University became the 10th member of the body in 2011.

Alongside our policy and sector-wide work we work with media in Ireland to raise the profile of The Open University.
