Meet our students

The Open University in Republic of Ireland provides supported open learning to students across the length and breadth of the country. Our flexible programmes and wide range of qualifications enable learners to choose a study route that best suits them.

Deirdre Gannon from Kilkenny

  Deidre Gannon

My career prospects have changed after completing my degree. The great thing was I walked into my dream job eight weeks after I received my results.

Deirdre graduated with a BSc in Psychology in 2013. After studying Psychology part-time at a college where she had to travel two hours to attend lectures, Deirdre spoke to a friend about The Open University. During her studies with the OU, the support Deirdre received from her family and husband was invaluable. Their encouragement kept her motivated.

Orlagh Costello from Tipperary

  Orlagh Costello

The structure the OU uses, with one-to-one support for most of its courses, suited me a lot better than a traditional university would have. I didn’t get lost in the crowd and the tutors responded quickly to all my requests and queries – even ones I thought were a bit daft!

Orlagh graduated with an MSc in Technology in 2014. She had studied for eight years and had focussed on a technical area from the beginning. Luckily for Orlagh she found that in Ireland, this was an area with more opportunities for further development. Orlagh combined her studies with working full-time. During her eight years of study she changed jobs four times and is now a Reliability Engineer for Pharm Ops, MSD, Ballydine Plant.

Barry Ryan from Wexford

  Barry Ryan

I have gained so much confidence doing this course. Before doing it I was so embarrassed that I had never finished school.

Barry graduated with a BSc in Psychology in 2016. With the help of The Open University Barry doesn’t feel like he has to leave conversations with friends when they talk about their academic achievements. Studying has helped Barry to map out a career path which motivated him. Now a Social Care Worker who works with people with intellectual disabilities, Barry found his degree to be completely relevant to the role.
