WJ Products Ltd

Most road users take road markings for granted yet they play an important role in keeping us safe. The road marking industry has changed very little in several decades. WJ’s existing products performed well but were based on historical technology. They recognised they needed to develop new ones to cope with the many types of environmental conditions and road surfaces onto which markings are applied.

The new R&D capability this KTP project enabled us to achieve means we can now produce high performing cold products which led to us now working internationally with Rijkswaterstaat the Dutch equivalent to Highways England.

Paul Aldridge
WJ Sustainability and Compliance Director

Achievements

  • Our R&D team gained new knowledge and expertise in lab synthesis, product analysis and formula optimisation of our thermoplastic & cold applied products.
  • The research methodology we developed turned out to be a game-changer for us in designing, preparing and testing new formulations, as it enabled a rapid ‘go/no go’ decision
  • WJ are now seen as the ‘go to’ expert on microplastics in road marking materials which has reinforced our sustainability and environmental agenda

KTP associate Joe D’Arcy was offered and accepted a full-time permanent post at WJ on completion of this successful KTP but has since moved into a sales role at BASF.
