This research led to the formation of the ongoing Floodplain Meadows Partnership, which interacts with conservation practitioners, landowners and other stakeholders to put into practice new understanding arising from the research.

The Partnership brings together The Open University and seven other organisations:

  • Royal Society for the Protection of Birds
  • Environment Agency
  • Natural England
  • Field Studies Council
  • Grasslands Trust
  • the Wildlife Trusts
  • Centre for Ecology and Hydrology.
To date, the Open University research team has visited more than 100 sites across England and Wales to gather data and provide advice. Key results of these activities are:
  • Many sites have altered their management  in response to the research findings.
  • In seven cases, drainage channels have been re-instated to facilitate removal of flood waters.
  • The Floodplain Meadows Partnership has become the first point of contact for people with questions about the management of floodplain meadows.
