'Open University involvement left a very positive permanent legacy'

The Hallé Concerts Society

Manchester's Hallé Orchestra has been performing classical music brilliantly for more than 150 years. But in an age when audiences are increasingly accessing music digitally, the orchestra lacked the expertise to exploit new technologies.

Working with the OU's Knowledge Media Institute (KMi) on a two-year Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP), the Hallé has explored new and emerging media technologies to generate new income streams.

'The KTP has enabled us to infuse our whole organisation with an understanding of new media. Working with The Open University has been terrific and their involvement has left a very positive permanent legacy.' John Summers, Chief Executive Hallé Concerts Society

Achievements

The KTP has helped the Hallé:

  • Generate new income streams and increase participation by reaching and introducing new audiences to the work of the orchestra and the ensembles
  • Engage more deeply with its existing audience
  • Increase its use of social media and produce a digital marketing strategy
  • Change the organisation’s culture to embrace digital technology
