Design research at the OU has an international standing, ranked third out of 72 UK institutions in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, and fifth in all previous research assessment exercises.
The uniqueness of our research lies in the emphasis on the generic aspects of design activity, rather than developing specific disciplinary areas. Our research is carried out under three strategic themes with the necessary critical mass of academics and research students associated to assist with:
• Design processes and products
• Sustainable design
• Complexity science and design
We can provide access to a range of technical instruments, including fused deposition modelling, CNC systems, 3D scanning and laser cutting.
