The application process

The artist/company can be based in any location across the nation within which they live/work.

The closing date for submission of an expression of interest is 2 August 2013 (5pm)

Applications are invited for the whole project, which is split into three stages, but only four selected artists (one from each nation) will succeed onto stage three. The three stages are:

Stage One: Expression of interest

If shortlisted they will be required to attend an interview at the relevant OU office, at their own expense.

Stage Two: Development of concept

Up to three artists/companies from each nation will be selected from the expressions of interest  to research and develop their ideas following an interview at the relevant OU office. The shortlisted artists/ companies will be invited to develop a detailed design/production proposal (fee of £1500 fully inclusive). 

At this stage the selected artists/companies will explore and understand the OU’s research, and its particular relevance to their own nation.  They will work with the project manager, nation lead and other key stakeholders to develop their ideas and present a fully viable final proposal to the project board within the agreed timescale.  Only one artist/company from each nation will be selected to proceed to the third stage of this brief.

Stage Three:  Delivery of concept

Four artists/companies (one from each nation) will develop and produce their work in October/November 2013 for a three day performance (arts production budget of up to £20,000 to include the cost of all fees, research and development, production, equipment, subcontracts, performance costs, travel, subsistence, accommodation, VAT and all other expenses).

Artists/companies will :

  • manage the production and delivery leading to a finished event/performance/installation
  • help provide all the necessary information required such as method statements, permissions, insurances and risk assessments
  • assist with liaison with the Site Management, Local Council and Safety Officer, Police and Red Cross etc. to ensure that the necessary local approvals, certificates and permissions are in place for the event to take place and that the necessary safety cover is available
  • perform/install/invigilate work as agreed over three days
  • be involved in promotional activities
  • upon completion, provide a final report and contribute to the project evaluation and legacy.

Ownership of the work will be retained by the artists.

Two OU postgraduate Art students will document this project. The successful artist/company should actively participate in this process and give interviews.

Shortlisted artists/companies will be invited to interview. Only shortlisted artists/companies shall be contacted.
