The Hallé Concerts Society

Manchester's Hallé Orchestra has been performing classical music brilliantly for more than 150 years.

But in an age when audiences are increasingly accessing music digitally, the orchestra needed to gain expertise in new technologies, so it could increase audience numbers and generate new income streams.

The KTP has enabled us to infuse our whole organisation with an understanding of new media. Working with The Open University has been terrific and their involvement has left a very positive permanent legacy.

John Summers
Chief Executive, Hallé Concerts Society

Working with The Open University's Knowledge Media Institute on a two-year Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP), the Hallé has embedded new technology in its organisation, significantly changing the way it interacts with its audience and engages new audiences, and greatly improving access to its performances.

Achievements

The KTP has helped the Hallé:

  • Produce and implement a digital marketing strategy
  • Generate new income streams through digitising its work, enabling downloads of its recordings
  • Engage more deeply with its existing audience and reach new audiences worldwide by redeveloping its online and social media presence and creating its Hallé Play website
  • Change organisational culture to embrace digital technology

It has also:

  • Saved costs in areas such as direct-marketing postage and paper, through using digital marketing
  • Saved travel costs and shared information among staff in a more efficient manner by using software such as Dropbox and Flashmeeting

The KTP associate Joseph Harrison was offered and accepted a full-time permanent post at the Hallé on completion of this successful KTP.
