Professional biography

I am a Lecturer in Languages (Italian)  and the chair of L150 (the Italian Intermediate module) in the School of Languages and Applied Linguistics at The Open University.

I  first joined the OU in 2007 as an Associate Lecturer of the Italian Beginners’ module L195 Andante. I then worked as a consultant and author until 2011 when I became a central academic.  My work focuses primarily on the creation and delivery of online language courses.

Recently I have been responsible for co-developing and co-leading the Open University’s Italian for Beginners MOOC (massive online open course) hosted by FutureLearn.

Prior to teaching at the OU I taught Italian language  to undergraduate and postgraduate students in the vocal department at the Royal Academic of Music and before that I taught in various FE colleges in London.

Research interests

My current research focuses on informal collaborative online  language learning. I am currently investigating  the use of language learning network sites in informal language learning practices.

Other areas of interest include peer mentoring and online language exchanges. I am also an advocate of Open Educational Reseources (OERs)  and am interested in the topic of  dyslexia and online language learning.

Teaching interests

My main teaching interests are: collaborative learning and practices; online language learner motivation. Learner autonomy and learner interdependence. As I work in a distance/online environment I am also very keen in developing a supportive online learning community.
