I am a fourth student working in Professor Vincent Gauci's research group. My PhD investigates trace greenhouse gas (methane and nitrous oxide) emissions from forests on free draining soils, in particular emission pathways (how the gases move from soils to the trees to the atmosphere) and how these pathways will be affected in the future by global change. These forests are not thought to be sources of these gases but that may not be the case.
I sample trace greenhouse gases at a tropical rainforest site on the banks of the Panama Canal and at a long-term UK experimental woodland. I'm particualrly interested in identifying how the production and consumption could be affected by a variety of factors:
