Clare Tope joined the OU Faculty of Wellbeing, Education & Language Studies in 2019. Clare contributes a specialism in mathematics to the primary team. Clare has worked in Higher Education for over a decade on programmes which support the education of both beginner and practising teachers at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. For example Clare has led a PGCE primary programme and the Mathematics Specialist Teacher programme. Prior to working in HE Clare worked as a local authority mathematics advisor and as a primary teacher where she was responsible for leading mathematics.
Clare’s research interests centre around children’s approaches to written calculation. Clare has explored how the methods children choose to use change according to the context they are working in. Clare’s research interests in the field of teacher education focus on how beginner teachers can be supported in their choice of examples to exemplify ideas for children. Clare is also interested in the work of subject leads in schools and is co-author of a text which explores the role of the mathematics specialist in a primary school.
