Professional biography

I work in Region 05 (East Midlands) as a Staff Tutor for the Faculty of Health and Social Care, working three days each week. I mainly support our tutors who teach on the Children and Young People modules run by the Faculty, including Youth Justice courses. I also have shared responsibility with my regional colleagues supporting other modules.

 However I also have an interest in supporting students with additional requirements and learning needs arising from health problems, both short term and long term. I have experience of working with students who experience specific learning difficulties including dyslexia, dyspraxia and mental health issues. I am interested in how learning is affected by a persons additonal requirements, and the range of methods that can be used to develop student learning skills. I work as a DSA practitioner, and am able to bring this knowledge to my general Staff Tutor work.

Research interests

I have a long standing interest in the manner in which students with disabilities can best be supported within education settings, especially through the use of technologies and formal processes such as the DSA. I have not had the opportunity to develop this as a formal research strand, though my personal scholarship reflects this interest.

Teaching interests

I taught Psychology  and Child Development within the Further Education sector at a variety of levels, including A level. I have worked as an Associate Lecturer at other Universities, including on Nursing programmes and more generic Social Sciences degrees. As an Associate lecturer within the Open University I taught on K101 for seven years.

Since starting my work with the Open University I have become involved in module production and presentation of a number of Children & Young People modules. I am interested in the differing ways in which students in practise are encouraged to reflect on their work and incoprpaorate this, and reflection on this, into their studies.
