My substantive role is as a Senior Lecturer, Staff Tutor in Physical Sciences, but I am currently on secondment as the AL Contract Faculty Implementation Lead for STEM. Prior to moving to the Open University, I held a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship at the London Centre for Nanotechnology, University College London. As an undergraduate, I read Natural Sciences at Cambridge, staying on for a PhD in the Surface Physics group at the Cavendish Laboratory. After finishing my PhD, I held a postdoc and teaching fellowship at Robinson College and also spent two years as a secondary teacher of maths and physics before moving to UCL.
My background is in surface science with a particular interest in dynamical phenomena at surfaces. I have applied experimental techniques ranging from helium atom scattering and scanning tunnelling microscopy to synchrotron x-ray and neutron scattering to evaluate surface energy landscapes and friction. I am particularly interested in providing the novel data needed for benchmarking the latest developments in theoretical approaches such as density functional theory and molecular dynamics.
I also have an interest in Physics Education Research, stemming from MEd / MA (ODE) and practitioner studies while teaching in the secondary sector, and I am currently involved in several PER projects based at the OU.
Currently on secondment, I was formerly Module Team Chair of SMT359 - Electromagnetism. I have contributed to the presentation of SS001, SXPA288, S217 and SMT359, as well as working on a wide variety of science modules as staff tutor and tutoring on SXP390.

This project seeks to address demographic gaps in attainment in physics; these mean that not only are certain groups of students, e.g. those of particular gender, socio-economic group or ethnicity or with a disability, considerably less likely to study the subject at higher education level, but also that those who do study have lower levels of retention in completing and passing their studies. This contributes to the “leaky pipeline” whereby the percentage of students and workers in particular demographic groups declines further and further. Various factors have been hypothesised as contributing to these discrepancies in attainment, in particular evidence is emerging that different students respond differently to different assessment tasks and to different features within the tasks. |
