Profile summary

Professional biography

I am a lecturer in Applied Linguistics and English Language in the School of Languages and Applied Linguistics in the Faculty of Wellbeing, Education and Languages Studies at The Open University.

Research interests

My research is in young children’s in-school language and literacy practices. My main  research interest is  young children's encounter with processes of being taught to read and write in school; how they interpret that encounter both in their in-class peer cultures and as individuals; and how these interpretations affect their development of in-school literacy practices

Teaching interests

My research interest arose from a long career in primary education in West London, working with children in diverse multi-lingual settings. I've taught across the primary age range - as a class teacher from Nursery (age 3) to Year 4 (age 8); and as a cover and supply teacher for all ages to Year 6 (age 11).  I have also been a Primary (age 3 – 11) ‘literacy consultant’ for three West London Local Education Authorities.

I have been Primary English lecturer in Initial Teacher Education at the Universities of Roehampton and St. Mary’s in Twickenham. I have taught modules in Primary English and Peace Education.
