Professional biography

I am an emeritus professor with more than 20 years' experience of distance learning and teaching at the Open University. I have designed and implemented language courses for online study involving regular use of synchronous voice-enabled e-tutorials.  I have run training workshops for language educators and for research students and researchers on four continents.

Earlier appointements were as a lecturer in French at Salford University, Westminster University and Queen Mary Westfield College (London University).

Research interests

I have researched extensively in the field of computer mediated communication for language learning, with a particular interest in real-time group conversations in multimodal settings. Current interests: methodologies for the description and analysis of online learning conversations, co-construction of group cultures by language learners in various online and social working environments, and cultural hegemonies in computer-assisted language learning.

Teaching interests

From a background in linguistics I came to the Open University in 1991 to lead the team developing the University’s first ever distance-taught language degree, starting with French modules, later followed by other languages.  Aimed at adult learners, these courses innovate in their mode of tuition, through real-time voice-over-Internet group conferencing. Teaching specialisms:  methodologies for the learning needs of distance-taught students and the use of teleconferencing tools in the development of language conversation skills.
