Living in Milton Keynes

Accommodation

Our student accommodation is different from that of other universities and colleges in the UK because all students live in private accommodation.

The Open University has no student hostels or purpose built student accommodation.

But Milton Keynes has lots of housing for you to choose from. This website will give you an idea of the location and variety of accommodation available, and offer some advice about how you can secure housing when you find it.

You will be given all sorts of advice about where to live and where not to live. But remember that you are the only person who can really decide if you will be happy living somewhere.

Like any other town, MK has some areas that are ‘nicer' than others – depending on your definition of ‘nice'.  Some places look like film sets for ‘Ye Olde England ' – pretty, chintzy, roses round the door – but would bore some students to death.  Other places are very urban chic, close to clubs, pubs and cinemas and very noisy at night – students with small children would probably give these a miss.

And MK has its share of 'dodgy' estates – which suit some students fine and others hate.  Information gathered by the local council about the different areas of Milton Keynes is available at:  Milton Keynes Observatory.

Generally, the UK is a safe place and the crime rate in MK is low.  Wherever you live it's a good idea to take sensible precautions when you go out, especially at night. In terms of where to avoid when looking for somewhere to live, our advice is to listen to what other students say and take this into account in your choice.  Most important of all, go and look at an area during the day and at night and see what you think.
