Policing and citizenship: Resourcing a better understanding

The Open University has been awarded an Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) grant under their Knowledge Transfer Fellowship Scheme. The project, ‘Policing and citizenship: Resourcing a better understanding’ will be carried out in conjunction with the Metropolitan Police Historical Collection.

The Metropolitan Police is the premier force in the UK – some argue in the world. Sadly, its museum and archive do not measure up to its proud position. The Open University is the premier distance learning institution in the world. Moreover, it hosts a research group recognised internationally as amongst the best historians of crime and policing in the world. This project aims to bring the two together to provide access to the Metropolitan Police’s unique collection of archives and artefacts and to produce a series of eight teaching packages for schools and other interested parties. In addition, it will provide a more profound awareness and understanding of police and policing for academics engaged with these issues.
