Top Award for Media Professor
The Academy of Social Sciences (AcSS) has conferred the award of Academician on Richard Collins, Professor of Media Studies at The Open University.
Professor Collins - whose research interests include the internet, broadcasting policy and regulation, and national identity and the media - is one of 57 academics to have received the award this year. Academicians are distinguished scholars and practitioners drawn from academia and the public and private sectors who are appointed by the Academy.
Professor Collins said: “I’m flattered by this award and am honoured to join a number of colleagues at the OU and elsewhere whose work has been similarly recognised”.
He has been specialist adviser to House of Lords’ Select Committees on three occasions, most recently to the Communications Committee enquiry earlier this year on the digital switchover of radio and television.
The Academy responds to Government and other consultations on behalf of the social science community, organises meetings about social science and seminars on topics that span social science disciplines, and sponsors a number of schemes that promote social science and enhance its value to society.
