Professor appointed to Alcohol Education and Research Council
Professor Sally Dibb has been appointed by the Secretary of State for Health to the Alcohol Education and Research Council (AERC). The council is a registered charity that works under the auspices of the Department of Health to create the UK's foremost evidence base on alcohol harm. Its work involves funding research and education projects on alcohol-related issues. More than 60 applicants applied for just a few posts, with selection taking place by interview at the Department of Health.
Sally will join a prestigious group of AERC trustees and will be involved in allocating research funding, decisions about strategic direction and fundraising. The role draws on Sally’s experience as Professor of Marketing and Director of the Institute of Social Marketing (ISM-Open) at The Open University Business School. ISM-Open (http://www.open.ac.uk/oubs/ism/) conducts research on the development and evaluation of behaviour change interventions based on marketing principles, and the impact of public policy on health and social welfare. Current projects are examining alcohol and alcohol marketing, mass media and young people, and tobacco control. In addition to its interests in health and wellbeing, the ISM-Open is conducting research in the areas of sustainability and sustainable consumption.
