The University supports a vibrant research and enterprise portfolio, focusing on issues affecting the social, political and physical well-being of individuals, communities, cultures and nations across a range of contexts. Key facts:- External funding for the University’s research and enterprise activities increases year on year and has grown to well over £20 million. In the academic year ending 31 July 2009 the Open University received £15.4 million in research grants and contracts from major UK Research Councils, as well as government, charitable trusts, commercial organisations and the European Union.
- In 2008/9 the University had 627 full-time research students and 676 part-time research students.
- The OU submitted 21 Units of Assessment to the national 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).
- The University’s online repository of research publications - Open Research Online (ORO) - over 14,000 items. This Open Access resource can be browsed and searched freely by anyone with internet access around the World.
- In 2008/09 the University employed 1,236 salaried academic staff.
