The 2013 annual report from Centre for Cities on the comparative performance of UK cities (launched on 21 January 2013), focuses on the potential of cities to boost economic growth through housing investment (both new build and rehab). Drawing on the intial research undertaken as part of the Tensions and Prospects research project, a Briefing Report has been prepared which recognises the value of the Centre for Cities report from an economic development point of view because of the way in which it highlights the importance of housing investment as a stimulus to national and local economic development, but questions its value as a spatial housing strategy. It does not unpick housing need or demand, affordability, or the disbenefits of high prices. Nor does it address properly the mechanisms for delivery, or the potential economic impact of quality and sustainability.
