Help

Help topics:

Moving around

Safari is divided into seven sections, each covering a particular aspect of information skills. Within each section, there are a series of topics to work through. You can work through Safari from the beginning to the end or focus on a particular area by using the Contents page to locate specific topics.

Use the section, topic, and page links to move through the content. There are links to the seven sections to the left of the page. Clicking on the section heading will open up the links to the topics in that section. Once you click on a topic link the first page of that topic will open and then you can click through the individual topic pages using the blue numbers at the bottom of the content.

Activities

Safari makes use of a number of activities. Some will ask you to drag and drop images on the screen using your mouse. Others will ask you to click to reveal content or move about the page. Most often you will be asked to make notes on a topic on paper. Sometimes you will be asked to keep these for use again in future activities. Finally, some activities require you to reflect on topics before moving on to further content.

Passwords

You will sometimes need to use your Open University passwords to access some of the information resources we subscribe to on your behalf. If this may be the case then you will find a link on the particular page to take you to the Library site that can help.

Your browser and settings

Safari works best on PCs with Internet Explorer version 6.0 and above. The site is designed to display best in screen resolutions of 800 x 600 and higher. Safari was designed for use on a PC, but if you are using a Mac, try using Mozilla browsers as this will make some of the content accessible to you. Please note, however, that some activities will not work as intended.

Accessibility

We have tried to ensure that Safari is accessible to all of our users. You can change the text size within your browser. As you work through you will notice some links to text versions of images and text versions of activities. These are intended for people who are using screen reading software. Ignore these unless you need to use them. Please contact the Library Helpdesk (Tel: 01908 659001) if you are having difficulty using Safari, or have any suggestions to make it more accessible.

Known problems

We have had reports that some users are having problems with Safari while using Internet Explorer 8. If you are finding that the left-hand navigation menu is not displaying correctly, one way which should help is to click on the "Compatibility View" icon within your web browser - this is the little icon next to the address bar which looks like a piece of paper with a rip across the middle. You might need to restart your browser once you have clicked on it. If this still doesn't help, please contact a member of the OU Library's Helpdesk Team.
