1-Understanding information

Topic 8    Identifying needs

In this section we begin to focus on the specific skills needed to search effectively for information. One of the skills that we hope you will develop through the course is the ability to ‘identify and articulate your information needs’

This is an important skill which is difficult to explain. It is the ability to move from what might be a rather vague feeling that you need or would like to know something to creating a clearly focused question or questions which you can then use to pursue your investigations.

For example – Mary is going to look for information on GM foods. This is a broad and complex subject. How can what she wants to know about GM food be more clearly explained so that it will help her move forward with her investigation?
