INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF CHEMISTRY 2011

Women share a chemical moment in time. Women chemists in the Department of Chemistry and Analytical Sciences joined an international ‘Mexican Wave’ breakfast that began in New Zealand to celebrate the launch of the International Year of Chemistry (IYC 2011).

Twenty female members of the department, and associate lecturers in Scotland and Northern Ireland, linked with The National Physical Laboratory, Liverpool John Moores University and the University of Lisbon in a virtual handshake by simultaneously using Skype, Elluminate and Twitter (#IYC2011, #chemhandshake).

The International Year of Chemistry 2011 (IYC 2011) is a worldwide celebration of the achievements of chemistry and its contributions to the well being of humankind. The year 2011 coincides with the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to Madame Marie Curie and this gives an opportunity to us to celebrate the contributions of women to science.
