It begins by looking at a number of specific headline issues that have a scientific basis - case studies such as BSE, the Brent Spar oil platform, genetic testing and the MMR vaccine. These issues raise a number of general questions relating to the relationship between science and society. For example, what does the public expect of science? Are scientists to be trusted? What responsibility do scientists have to the public? Are anti-science beliefs becoming more prevalent? What is the relationship between science-in-the-making and policy making? The course ends by looking at the 'public understanding of science' as a practical and academic activity. Is the aim of a scientifically literate society desirable or attainable? Are current initiatives working?
