MSc in Science

The MSc in Science is a modular programme, dealing in a topic-led way with two main themes or ''strands": Science Studies and Frontiers in Medical Science. The two strands are complementary, and as a student you may choose to study modules from both if you wish. Whether you follow a single strand or mix your modules, the award will be the same: the Open University MSc in Science.

Structure of the Programme

The MSc in Science is a modular programme, with most courses carrying a value of 60 credit points. 180 points are needed for the award of the degree. There are seven 60 point taught courses to choose from and also a 60 point project course, giving a total of 480 points of core material from which to select the 180 needed for the MSc.

Award of the MSc degree

If you are awarded a distinction grade for at least 120 points of your Open University study, you will be eligible for the award of the degree with distinction. If you are awarded at least a merit grade in at least 120 points of your Open University study, you will be eligible for the award of the degree with merit. Holders of the award are permitted to use the letters MSc(Science)(Open) after their names.
