About Us

Head of Department: Dr Nick Rogers

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences has an outstanding reputation in both research and teaching. It comprises about 22 academic staff and 17 researchers (research fellows and post-doctoral scientists) working on a diverse range of topics within the three broad themes of:

(i) Earth, Environment and Ecosystems,
(ii) Geochemistry and Cosmochemistry, and
(iii) Planetary Science.

The Department benefits from world-class laboratory facilities and infrastructure, particularly for isotope geochemistry, Ar-Ar geochronology, and laser and microprobe analysis. In the 2008 RAE it contributed to the interdisciplinary submission from the Centre for Earth, Planetary, Space and Astronomy Research (CEPSAR) with 70% of staff being recognised as 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent'.

Staff within Earth and Environmental Sciences hold grants from NERC, PPARC, the Leverhulme Trust, the EC and the Royal Society. The Department is exceptionally well equipped for geochemical analysis (facilities include plasma, noble gas and solid source mass spectrometers, an electron microprobe, ICPMS, XRF, FTIR and an elemental analyser), biogeochemistry and ecosystem science, remote sensing and palaeontology. These laboratories are further supported by extensive rock preparation facilities, an inter-faculty electron microscope suite, and electonic and engineering workshops. Recent HEFCE strategic funding has enabled upgrading of research facilities so that we now have a new building adjacent to the main Earth and Environmental Sciences building that accommodates interdisciplinary research in the ecosystem and geobiology areas (EGL building).
