Environmental Change in Earth History

This research area ecompasses four themes that embrace research on environmental change both today and on millenial and Phanerozoic timescales.

Biogeochemistry

A dynamic area of research within the Environmental Change in Earth History area.

Oceanography

Research focuses on understanding the role of the oceans, specifically ice shelf environments and hydrothermal circulation, in determining global climate.

Palaeobotany and climate change

The pattern and process of climate change under conditions of global warmth is being assessed by combining sedimentological and palaeobotanical palaeoclimate proxies with numerical climate modelling.

The marine sedimentary record

This research combines studies of marine carbon sequestering in the Mesozoic greenhouse at low latitudes and its implications for the global carbon cycle, with assessments of the regularity, magnitude and interaction of sedimentary cycles of different temporal orders.

Vegetation/climate interaction

High resolution studies of the Quaternary of Eurasia through the palynology of wetlands complements the studies of carbon and nitrogen cycling in modern-day forests and wetlands.
