Welcome to the School of Environment, Earth and Ecosystems Sciences!

At the School of Environment, Earth and Ecosystem Sciences, we have an international reputation for research and innovative distance teaching. Our School is diverse and inclusive, and is made up of around 50 campus-based staff, 25 PhD students and 20 associated staff as well as an undergraduate and post-graduate student body of around 500.

We carry out interdisciplinary research covering five main themes: Ecosystems, Palaeoenvironmental Change, Dynamic EarthEarth Systems Modelling and Educational Research in Earth and Environmental Sciences. Our vibrant research community based in the Gass Building at Walton Hall regularly hosts seminar speakers and has access to the Faculty's exceptionally well equipped research facilities.

Our research directly informs our teaching and the modules we offer cover theoretical, practical and applied aspects of environmental and Earth sciences. These modules lead our distance learning students to gain both undergraduate qualifications (Environmental Sciences, Earth Sciences and Geography and Environmental Science) and post-graduate qualifications (MSc Earth Science and MSc Science).

We regularly collaborate with other Schools within the Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, as well as the our Geography colleagues in the Faculty of Arts and Social Science, for teaching and research. We are committed to making science accessible to all by producing free courses available through Open Learn and allowing people to engage with our research through citizen science projects, BBC co-productions and events in local schools.
