Teaching Interests

I have written primary course material for many OU courses. Those recently and currently in presentation are:

S204 Biology: Uniformity and diversity (2001-)

S293 The Fats of Life (2003-2006)

SXR374 Fat - The physiology of adipose tissue (2005-2009)

S366 Evolution (2007-)

S170 Darwin and Evolution (2009-)

Research Interests

Research:

  • The comparative anatomy of adipose tissue and its functional basis

  • Anatomy and metabolism in natural obesity in wild mammals and birds

  • Paracrine interactions between adipose and lymphoid tissues in mammals and their role in determining lipids in immune cells.

  • The role of chronic inflammation in long-term changes in the structure and properties of adipose tissue.

  • Effects of small quantities of lipid-soluble pollutants on paracrine interactions between adipose and lymphoid tissues in mammals

Current Research

In collaboration with medical and scientific staff of Antigen Presentation Research Group, Imperial College, London, Northwick Park and St. Mark's Campus, Harrow and Department of Surgery, St. Mark's Hospital, Harrow:

  • 2000-present The role of perinodal adipose tissue in determining the fatty acid composition of lymphoid tissues in Crohn´s Disease.
