Brain Development

Research in this area has targeted cellular and molecular aspects of Human and Rodent Brain Development in utero, with the focus being on normal development, congenital malformations including hydrocephalus, Walker-Warburg syndrome (type-II lissencephaly) and developmental disorders such as Batten’s disease (a fatal inherited lysosomal storage disorder affecting neuronal development). These research areas have been progressed through collaborations with colleagues in Germany and at the Institute of Psychiatry in London. A significant component of this work addresses glial cell development, particularly the Origin and Cell Lineage of Microglia, which forms part of an international collaboration between the OU and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, funded by a competitive earmarked research grant from the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong (Project No. 441206; Prof WY Chan & Dr P Rezaie).
