The
MSc in Science is a modular programme, dealing
in a topic-led way with two main themes or ''strands":
Science Studies and Frontiers in Medical Science.
The two strands are complementary, and as a student you may
choose to study courses from both if you wish. Whether you
follow a single strand or mix your courses, the award will
be the same: the Open University MSc in Science.
Structure of the programme
The MSc in Science is a modular programme, with most courses
carrying a value of 60 credit points. 180 points are needed
for the award of the degree. There are seven 60 point taught
courses to choose from and also a 60 point project course,
giving a total of 480 points of core material from which to
select the 180 needed for the MSc.
Each
discrete course is taken over one Open University
academic year (February-October).We would expect students
starting from scratch on the programme to take one course
per year for three years, but if it is more convenient you
can take a year or two off between courses without losing
the credit points you have already gained, as long as you
complete the programme within seven years of starting. Our
tutoring arrangements mean that your studies need not be interrupted
even if you change your job or move to a different part of
the country.
With
the exception of the Project Module, the courses need not
be studied in any particular order. You can choose the sequence
and combination that suits you best. If you decide to take
the Project Module, however, this would probably be your last
course, and would build on the experience gained in earlier
courses. You cannot start the Project Module until you have passed one of the taught courses.
Award
of the MSc degree
If you are awarded a distinction grade for at least 90 points
of your Open University study, or a distinction grade in at
least 60 points together with a merit grade in at least a
further 60 points, you will be eligible for the award of the
degree with distinction. Holders of the award are permitted
to use the letters MSc (Science)(Open) after their names.
