Learning Outcomes

Students who complete the MSc in Science will have developed and acquired the following skills, knowledge and understanding:

Knowledge and understanding

  • A systematic understanding, knowledge and critical awareness of current science issues, much of which will be at the forefront of their field of study.
  • A comprehensive understanding of techniques applicable to advanced scholarship in their chosen areas of study.

Cognitive skills

  • Conceptual understanding that enables the student to evaluate critically current research and advanced scholarship in their field of study.
  • Conceptual understanding that enables the student to evaluate research methodologies and develop critiques and propose alternative hypotheses, where appropriate.
  • The ability to deal with complex issues both systematically and proficiently and make sound judgements in the absence of complete data.
  • Decision-making in complex and unpredictable situations. 5. Demonstration of originality of thought in the application of knowledge.

Key skills

  • Communication of information and conclusions both to specialist and to non-specialist audiences.
  • Continued development of relevant new skills to a high level.
  • Demonstration of self-direction and originality in tackling and solving problems.
  • Ability to act autonomously in planning and implementing tasks at a professional level.
  • Use of information and communications technology (ICT) to locate information and to communicate with the University.

Practical and professional skills

  • Continued advancement of knowledge and understanding in selected areas.
  • Exercise of initiative and personal responsibility.
  • Exercise of independent learning ability required for continuing professional development.
