S807
is a course in the Frontiers in Medical Science strand of
the MSc programme. It surveys a prominent area of contemporary
medical science: the molecular understanding of disease and
the use of medicinal chemistry in designing drugs to treat
disease states. This subject is of fundamental importance
in medical therapy because it enables both the identification
of potential drug intervention strategies and also the rational
design of those drugs. Such drugs, designed to help the body
to cope with transient or chronic disease, can both enhance
quality of life and increase longevity. Topics chosen for
particular study include cancer, inflammatory disease, infectious
disease, heart disease, neuropathology and drug targeting
and delivery.
The course will be of interest to those with a desire to know more about the molecular basis of drug therapy. It covers issues and themes that are common to professional training schemes, but it is not specifically designed to provide such training. The course is included in the accredited pathway for Graduateship of the Royal Society of Chemistry through Open University study.
