S809 is a course in the Frontiers in Medical Science
strand of the MSc programme. The purpose of S809 is to introduce
students to the underlying principles of medical imaging techniques,
which form an essential part of contemporary diagnostic medicine.
The course introduces some of the instrumental methods of
medical science, and includes the major imaging modalities:
X-rays, gamma imaging and PET, magnetic resonance imaging,
and ultrasound. Topics such as functional imaging, image processing,
radiation and risk and social issues are also covered.
The
course will be of interest to those with a desire to know
more about current medical imaging techniques. It covers issues
and themes that are common to professional training schemes,
but it is not specifically designed to provide such training.
