Abstract:

The recently launched Solar Orbiter mission is designed to study the Sun and inner heliosphere from vantage points close to the Sun and out of the ecliptic plane, providing new insight into our home star. This has necessitated the development of a suite of remote sensing instruments that can operate autonomously far from the Earth, close to the Sun, and with limited downlink, yet still provide the unique observations that will maximise the scientific return of the mission. In this talk I will focus on the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI), the main telescope onboard Solar Orbiter that observes the solar corona, discussing the unique design and operations of the instrument. I will also present and discuss some of the first observational results from EUI, which were obtained during commissioning of the instrument, and finally look forward to the start of the science phase of the mission in November 2021.
